"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Stevie, happy birthday to you!". The chorus rang out and a layer cake decorated with animal crackers was brought before the birthday girl. Stevie ran to Mick and Lindsey and gave them a hug. After all, they were the ones behind the cake. Then, the gifts were passed out. Mick gave Stevie 12 red roses and a teddy bear and Lindsey gave her a turquoise ring. Stevie thanked the boys profusely and uncorked the bottle of Verve Clicquot Christine gave her.
In the Fleetwood Mac tradition, Mick signaled to bring the cocaine out by using the last verse of his (and Stevie's) favorite poem: Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. They ran to Mick like dogs running to get a bone from their master. While the boys were doing rail after rail of marching powder, Stevie got a small spoonful of the stuff and snorted some from the "faerie bottle" necklace Don Henley gave her.
Truth be told, Stevie was in a reflective mood that night. Even though she was physically there at the party, getting wasted like everyone else, her mind was well and truly elsewhere. She was rather pensive, thinking about the journey that led her and Lindsey to where they were at that point in time. It seemed like just yesterday that they were two young starving artists in San Francisco, scraping by and praying for their big break. She ruminated on that thought for a moment before Mick's voice snapped her back into reality.
"Stevie, love, they want you to make a speech." Stevie took a deep breath in before standing up and launching into her speech: "Thank you all for coming out tonight! I hope you have enjoyed this as much as I have. I mean, we definitely could use this party, seeing as how we've, uh, worked so hard this week." Everyone applauded as she sat back down. By 1 a.m, the party dispersed, with some passed out on the couches at Village Recorder, but most at home wondering how they would make it to the studio in one piece the next day.
