The moment Ariana was killed, Gellert and Albus' relationship was destined to be a tragedy. No one dared investigate the accident caused by the three-way duel; no one dared cast the Priori Incantatem that would reveal the wand that had killed her. Gellert's sudden departure was caused by his fear of facing his lover's reaction, fear of relentless questioning, but most of all, fear that his conscience would not let him rest.

The Gellert that left was not regretful; he was arrogant, he was intelligent, and he knew that explanations were now meaningless. Was Gellert Grindelwald's determination to find the Deathly Hallows just to fulfil his ambitions? Or could it be... he only wanted to bring someone's little sister back to life, so that he could muster up the courage to say "I'm sorry, will you forgive me?" to the only person he'd ever loved?

Still, the difference between Gellert and Albus was that Gellert could destroy everything that meant nothing to him for the people who meant everything to him, but Albus was deeply affected by his sister's death and Gellert's leaving, and bore the death of every person Gellert killed, wizard or Muggle, with a heavy heart.

Life had played the lovers hard, and they were destined to walk paths that would forever oppose the other's. When everyone thought Albus was the only wizard powerful enough to be a match for Grindelwald, only Albus knew that when he faced him, he could not raise a hand against Gellert, for he could not shirk the burden that he carried. But when the time came for the duel, Albus Dumbledore set off for the appointed place, telling himself that the duel was irrelevant, that the reason he was going was to see him again, to see the person he had loved in happier times one last time, and die a happy man. He wondered: would his opponent come to meet him with the same thoughts?

Albus Dumbledore won the duel, and Gellert Grindelwald was imprisoned in Nurmengard. No one but them cared about the duel proceeded; after all, those who were awaiting a saviour got exactly what they wanted.

The captive Gellert did not receive Albus' forgiveness; after decades of waiting, the only news he received was of his death.

For someone as arrogant as Gellert Grindelwald, what could utterly destroy him, but also make him willingly stay in Nurmengard all these years?

It was love; when love has passed away, life has no meaning, and this was exactly what Voldemort did not understand.

Death united these two. Now, no one can separate them.
