I am really excited. I look at the mirror and see a girl dressed in a sleeveless white tank top, a navy blue skater skirt and five inch nude heels. I got all of those on sale at Forever 21, a new clothing store that just opened beside our condominium. Yeah, we aren’t really filthy rich, but we’re not super poor either. My dad, George and I are living quite comfortably, with three meals a day and just enough money to pay for electricity and phone bills.
Recently, dad just got a new job at BMI Enterprises as Head Engineer. They’re currently working renovating San Juanico bridge while applying top notch architecture to its foundations. Yeah, my dad’s a civil engineer and he’s got a busy sched. His former job at RJ Company didn’t end so well. This resulted from jealous colleagues and a dim-witted boss who didn’t even give enough funds for materials.
You know how they say kids aspire to be like their parents? I guess you could say I am the perfect example of that quote. I mean, I’ve been inspired by the work of my dad that I decided to take up Civil Engineering at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, the premier state university.
I know, I know. Engineering is more geared towards the patriarchs, aka men, but there weren’t any restrictions about gender or whatsoever when I applied. I think it’s actually cool because I love Math and Science, especially Physics. And what makes it way cooler is that I am the only girl in my block (probably the only girl in the Engineering Department, I hope)
Growing up, I’ve always been one of the boys. The Metropolitan Science High School is a co-educational school, making it easier for girls to interact with boys. I fondly remember the late nights I’d spend at Rejahn’s with our study group. I was the only girl there, but I did feel like I was one of them. Most of time, we study our butts of just to pass rigorous Science exams but sometimes, we let loose and hang out in Rejahn’s game room. God, beer pong has never so fun with the boys.
They’re all going abroad now, except James, my best friend in that study group. Actually, we started out as lunch table mates because all tables in the Phi-Sci cafeteria were already taken. We then resorted to sitting beside each other at one table. The experience was awkward but most of us were classmates anyway so it wasn’t a big deal getting to know each other. This happened during sophomore year, when I was a shy nerd, but after Rejahn started having difficulties with second year Math, we all resolved to help him out. That’s how our study group was formed. We’re quite of a name in the school actually but we weren’t as notorious as the other “study groups” were. They partied all night and posted drunk pictures on FB while still managing to get high grades. I will never understand how they pull that off.
Okay, back to James. I didn’t really have a girl best friend in high school, and I don’t care what gender James was but he was my confidante for three years. Whenever I’d get all emo and depressed because of a five mistakes in a chemistry test, he’d always comfort me and tell me it’s okay- that the world won’t end. He’s always my punching bag when things get rough and I appreciate him being there for me.
He’s invited me to prom and grad ball. We were crowned prom king and queen, and in the dance, he defined the relationship stating that he wanted us to be just friends. But somewhere along the way, I kind of fell for him. Too bad that he friendzoned me during grad ball. Not really the best kind of farewell, but hey, at least I graduated as salutatorian with a scholarship to boot.
We’re still in touch though. It’s just that, I am glad I don’t have to spend my awkward college years with him because he’s taking Intarmed in UP Manila. That way, I wouldn’t have to be thrown offguard whenever I gaze at his perfectly-chiseled face or caught ogling at his shapely abs. Not only is he super smart but he is super hot. And when I say hot, I mean Chace Crawford hot.
I can’t believe people actually thought we were a thing. To be honest, I actually liked being called his “girl-space-friend.” But he’d always ruin the moment by saying, “Oh, we’re just friends.” Well, that explains why he never made a move (apart from the brofists and friendly hugs) on me.
Anyway, I am over that phase. Sure, I got depressed. Who wouldn’t be devastated at having a lifelong ambition crushed in ten seconds? Today, I am going to forget all about that. Today, I will maintain the scholarship, meet new friends and become a different person.
