primrose's fingers reached into the mailbox, she grasped onto a white envelope labelled, 'property of miss primrose hargrove'. being the curious young girl she was, she ripped open the envelope and retrieved the slip of paper inside. her mouth gaped open as she read the words inscribed on the letter.

'miss primrose ophelia hargove must immediately relocate to hawkins, indiana, in which she will be cared for by her father, neil hargrove.'

she tucked a few long brown strands of hair behind her ear and began to walk into her grandmother's room.

"what's wrong pumpkin?" her grandmother asked, completely oblivious to the letter in her granddaughter's hand.

"are you really shipping me off to live with that bastard?" she questioned while holding the letter next to her head, attempting to refrain from yelling at her innocent grandma.

"darling- I'm getting older, my joints are beginning to get stiff and I can barely move. how do you expect me to take care of an exuberant young girl like you?" she queried.

it was true, primrose had always been a ball of energy, she had bruises all over her legs from falling over at the skate park and frequently broke treasured vases and statues all around the house due to her vivacious personality. primrose would never admit it though, she was too stubborn.

"i hate you!" she yelled as she stormed out of her grandma's room.

"your flight leaves at nine o'clock in the morning!" her grandma yelled back as primrose attempted to block out her voice.

tears began to well up in her eyes, she had never had a good relationship with her father, ever since she was little, she had a burning hatred for him. he would do awful things to her mother, throw things at her, yell at her, and even physically abuse her. she thought that when her mother abandoned him, she had escaped his evil ways, but alas, she was incorrect.

looking at the letter brought a sick feeling to her stomach, so she clutched onto it tightly and strode into the backyard, where a river ran serenely. she tore the paper into small pieces and tossed them into the water. all she wanted to do was crawl into a ball and disappear, there was no motive for her to even be alive anymore. she had no friends, bad grades at school and no mom.

with her mother gone, things had been difficult to say the least, although primrose loved her grandmother immensely, she couldn't help but feel a longing to speak to her beloved mother again. just to hear her voice one last time would be enough.

she sat down on the grass and looked into the water, spotting fish and eels swimming below her in perfect harmony. she wrapped her pale arms around her legs as the cool breeze blew against them, attempting to obtain some sort of warmth. her eyes slowly shut as her petite body lied down on the grassy surface below.

"prim, darling- wake up, it's time to get your bag packed," primrose's grandma whispered as she hobbled above her.

her eyes fluttered open as she raised herself off of the grass that she must have fallen asleep on the night before. she dusted off her blue denim mom jeans and slowly followed her grandma inside.

"i'm sorry about what I said last night grandma, i don't hate you, i'm just scared," primrose apologised as she scrunched up her face, attempting to hold back the tears.

"you'll be perfectly fine pumpkin, you have your brother- remember?" she reminded her.

primrose had completely forgotten that her brother would be there with her. the only thing she remembered about billy was how protective he was of her, even at the young age of eight, he would always take care of his little sister, no matter what it took.

when he was eleven, he even fought the boy that had been grafitting awful things about primrose around the school. not many people liked billy due to his somewhat animalistic behaviour, but primrose always loved him dearly.

she missed him deeply though, they hadn't talked to each other for years due to the fact that their mom ran away with primrose, hoping to escape neil for good.

primrose snapped back to reality and smiled at her grandma as she walked into her room, beginning to shove all of her clothes into a backpack. eventually, she managed to squeeze them all in without breaking any zippers.

"primrose- we need to leave now," her grandma yelled from the next room.

she grabbed a few essentials, her walkman, her skateboard and the locket that her mother bought for her birthday and walked out of the door. leaving any and all fragments of her old life behind.
