over-produced trap music blared from another room as joe entered his own and set his bag down on the floor. he came here a few weeks ago to move his belongings into his dorm; his new living space for the next year. he glanced around at his progress so far, noticing how empty it still looked. blank cream walls stared back at him, making joe consider getting a few posters or paintings to hang up. he made his way over to his neatly-made bed, which certainly wouldn't stay like that for long, the bass still booming from next door. sighing, he reached for his phone and headphones, placing them on his head. he opened spotify and pressed play on somebody to love by queen, drowning out the awful sounds from the surrounding rooms. he closed his eyes and sighed.

it was the day before his official first day at cambridge university, where he was studying psychology. the human mind had always interested him, and once he graduated he planned to become a mental health counsellor. if not that, then a teacher. he loved working with kids, too.

joe mustve dozed off for a while, as a loud bang caused his eyes to shoot open and for him to dart up. the noise repeated itself, coming from the direction of his door. letting out a sigh, he swung his legs over the bed and paced over to the door, opening it to reveal a tall man with brown, well-styled hair.

"we're just popping to the shops, you coming?" he asked in a smooth british accent. joe somehow forgot this wasn't america.

he gulped. he was hoping to have minimised all human contact today, although it doesn't look like that plan is succeeding.

"uh," joe stuttered. he was going to regret this decision. "sure."

he grabbed his coat & wallet and followed the slender man down the hall, noticing a group of other youths slightly ahead of him, of whom he assumed were the rest of his dorm mates. he made out a ginger haired boy, standing rather close to a short blonde girl, who didn't look too happy. a little behind were two brunette girls, almost joined at the hip.

the taller boy slowed down a little to catch up to joe's speed.
"i'm gwilym, by the way" he smiled.

"nice to meet you, i'm joe" he responded, more confidently than he expected.

"so," gwilym started. "what are you studying here?"

"psychology."

"oh, cool. i take architecture."

"nice."

that was where the conversation was left, as they continued to make their way to the local tesco's in silence.
