Lukas head out towards the dock as the moon had began to disappear over the horizon. The sky turned from dark greys and blues to slightly warm shades, but not enough to reveal the island to the sunlight to come sometime soon.
"Hello sun, how are you doing? I hope you had a nice night down in the blue." Lukas turned his head behind him to make sure nobody had seen him sneak out like he always did every morning. "Good morning to the village, here's to the maybe of something new." Lukas turned his head back around towards the water and stared down at the water. "To that hello, hello, hello every morning, sitting in the dark on the dock with the fishes. Watch the ocean fall on the shore in the distance. Gotta close my eyes to those revel ocean wishes but.." The sun began to rise over the horizon of the sea turning the sky's hues into warm shades of pink, red, oranges, yellows. "Hello, hello, hello."
-
Jesse sat up tiredly, his hair a mess, a silk quilt over him. He heard a sudden knock that had woke him up from his slumber that had not been long enough for personal liking. "Hello?"
-
(Italics are what both boys are thinking.)
-
This morning the sun was a flicker and now it's a fire and the world's getting bigger from the pinprick darkness into the light for the life we're dreaming out of the night, and I say "Hello, hello, welcome to the morning."
"To the island where the days are all the same." Lukas sighed annoyed at his responsibilities restraining him to do what he wanted to do-- explore.
Hello, hello, hello, do the same things over and over again.
-
"I'm holding out hope that today is the day it changes." Lukas looked out towards the ocean and took a deep breath. "Always looking for a new day."
-
Because we're always moving forward to the same old, same old, watching while the sun swings round again. Horizon all around us so we always see the light and pull it back to memory on all our darkest nights. One by one out of dark and into paradise, stretch your arms and say your prayers, throw the boats out to the tide. 'Cause "it's a new day."
-
Jesse's father stood tall at the head of the dock where all the boats were parked. The male sailors on the island stood tall infront of him as the old dictator began to give orders. "We're ready to start the day," he spoke deeply from his chest, projecting his sound to the sailors infront of him. These simple words had given them permission to begin to use the ships again.
Jesse's father turned his head towards the young brunette with emerald green eyes who was next in line to lead, and said quietly, "Go on and give them commands, I wanna see how you do."
Jesse's eyes lit up as soon as he heard the words. Maybe this day was going to be different. Jesse began walking onto one of the ships and began to give orders with a smile across his face. "So grab those ropes and pull the sails feet high." He continued on the three ships to give the same orders and waited for his father's approval to set them off.
"Can I send them off?" Jesse asked while scratching his upper arm as he hoped that his father's answer would be yes.
"Go ahead."
Jesse turned towards the ships and projected as loud and far as he could, "It's time to face the waves!"
-
Lukas somehow got a break during the daylight hours for a good long ten minutes where he decided to spend at the dock. He stared out at the ocean as he watched three ships passing by. "So many times I have watched the ships sail out on the sea. Watch the boys grab their swords and be who I wanna be."
He looked behind him to see his father walking towards him, but Lukas wanted to continue wondering where that ship was going and what it was doing.
-
Jesse stood alone on one of the ships while everyone was focused on fishing and the boat was barely moving. He looked out onto the horizon and saw a few islands, but mostly more water. But then the ship rocked slightly, just enough to startle him. "I'll try and focus; keep the noise in my chest to a roar." All he wanted to do was take over the ship with one other person like him and travel to far distant lands. "Does anybody out there listen like I do? Is anybody out there like me-" The ship rocked again. He decided to continue his thoughts later.
-
Lukas' father, Nicholas had brought him on a walk up the small mountain next to the village to talk about something Lukas had not known about. "So, you know how I'm the leader of this island, Lukas, but I feel like my term is up."
It sparked in Lukas' head quickly. This is the one thing he did NOT want to ever come. "What, no. You still have years left of life. Don't give up so easily, because I'm not ready to lead."
"You're old and mature enough to, along with the fact that you're in better shape than I am."
Lukas stood there for a second in silence, trying to come up with an acceptable way of declining, but nothing seemed to be working, so he what was going through his head. "I don't think you get it, I don't want to."
"But you have to eventually, and this is the perfect time to start. I've already scheduled a meeting for tomorrow that will announce that you will be leading soon."
"Wait, back up, you did what?" Lukas heard what he said, but it went by so fast that he became unaware if he was having a nightmare or living his worst.
"After the meeting, it'll be a week until you take my place. It's perfectly planned. Do you see a problem with it?"
"I want to explore before I settle into a permanent position. I wanna learn to sail and fight, but I wanna see the world before I accept this role I can't back out of until I die." Lukas presented his point of view of the argument, but he could tell by his father's facial expression that Nicholas didn't budge.
"You're going to lead."
"But-"
"No buts. Get back to work."
-
Jesse and Lukas sat the docks on their separate islands staring down at the water.
(Underlined is Lukas', Bold is both.)
I just
Don't want
Tomorrow.
I'll fight
Don't want
To be king.
I'll prove
Don't want
My power.
I want, I want, I want everything.
(Back to normal italics)
Lukas stared up at the stars and listened to the waves. Jesse sat back on a poll of the dock also staring up at the sky to see a shooting star cross down.
Because we're always moving forward to the same love, same love, watching while the sun swings round again. Horizon all around us so we always see the light and watch for Gods and wishing stars in all our darkest skies. One by one out of dark and into paradise. Stretch your arms and say your prayers, throw the boats into the wild. It was a new day.
Lukas looked out to see a small island on the horizon he had never seemed to notice before. It looked very miniscule from his perspective, but he knew if he could see it from the edge of the dock, it must of been huge. He thought that lif must be different over there and a lot better. More freedom, more exploring, not always trying to play it safe. "Hello, hello, hello."
Jesse looked out on the dock and wondered if he was the only one who paid attention and looked for miniscule details in minor aspects of life. Always when he was here with his legs hanging over the side, he stared at the small island on the horizon and thought that a place like that would be fun to explore with someone else who was just like him with curiosity of the world. "Hello, hello, hello."
Hello, hello, hello.
