Little Anne run chased by a dog. A very ugly, smell, with brown muddy fur. She runs toward her house, near the lake. The dog, 'Bert' it is called.
Giggling as she runs, she doesn't realised there's a stranger in front of her door, arguing with her mother. Miss Wallace, a widow, her mom, just closed the door in front of the stranger.
Anne stop running, remember her mother will scolded her if she knew. She tiptoed around the house. Bert already stop chasing her either.
"Oh, Bert, mama will be angry. I don't want to. Look at us." She looked at her dress, wringkles, dry with mud. Her brown casual dress no longer look clean, something her mama insist everyday. Little Anne sigh, she thinks the stranger already makes mama mad! Imagine her reaction if mama see.
Anne watch as the stranger walking down from her porch, a man, tall, for little Anne just a small and thin kid among her friends. His hair brown and curl. His hat looks funny because it's to big for his head, Anne thinks. Or maybe his red coat and blue pant, just looks different from the usual man she met.
She keep hiding behind a tree beside her house. The man slowly go from where she came. Little Anne decide it is time for lunch. Her tummy already grumble and so her Bert, she thinks.
Anne walk to the front porch and open the door. She barely take three steps when she heard.
"Anne Marry Wallace, stop right know! What do you think you're doing, walking in with the mud and look at your hair!" Her mom stop her, and Anne did her only best, knowing her mom will stop at scolding. So she smile wide, with her dimples on both cheek, full of teeth, 2 of her front teeth disappear.
Her mother chuckles. And so happy day again for little Anne.
