I step out into the back alleyway of the bakery I work at, throwing the trash bag in a dumpster.

The sound it makes as it lands, though, isn't normal, and the groan of pain after it is even less normal.

"H-hello?" I ask.

It's silent again, but I'm still curious and slightly concerned.

"Are you hurt?" I feel like an idiot for talking to myself, but if someone is hurt, I need to help them.

I get on my tiptoes to peer into the dumpster, but I don't see anything. I turn to back inside, but I catch sight of something out of the corner of my eye.

It looks like a body part, a knee or an arm or something, but the rest of the body is concealed in trash.

I gasp and look around the alleyway for a way to get to it.

Along the walls, theres empty wooden crates. I stack a few and climb over the side, digging to uncover the arm.

--

It takes a while, but I manage to uncover the boy. He has dog ears and a cute tail.

"A hybrid..." I mumble sadly, reaching out to stroke his face.

He whimpers and groans again.

I gasp, snapping back to the present.

"Hey! Can you stand? I need to get you out of here!"

He groans again, maybe in acknowledgement, so I reach down to help him up.

He drapes himself over me and lets me do most of the work of getting us back on solid ground.

Once we're there with minimal damage.... Well, additional damage, I help him sit on one of the crates, barely conscious.

"We need to get you to a hospital." I tell him, fussing over his weak form.

"N-no..." He says his first word.

"What? Yes! You're hurt."

He leans forward, painful looking, and grips my shoulders. For the first time, he opens his eyes.

His dark chocolate eyes burn into me, pained and determined.

"Y-you can't take me back th-there..." He manages before falling forward and resting his head on my chest.

"Okay. I can't take him back there..." I decide not to pry. He looked genuinely scared.

I pull one of his arms over my shoulder. If we hurry, I can get him to my car and to my house to take care of him.

--

I perk up as he stirs. It's been all night, but he seems okay. He had many bruises and cuts, some worse than others. I cleaned him up as best as possible, but now that he's awake, we can get him in the shower.

"That's it, sit up." I help him gently.

"Who are you?" He manages out, almost pitifully.

"My name is Rei Agust." I tell him. I explain what happened.

"Can you come get a bath? Then we can eat." I don't bring up the hospital again, not wanting to freak him out

He doesn't say anything, only giving a curt nod.

I help him settle into the warm bath in only his boxers. He insisted that I stay to help him. I insisted he at least had boxers on.

He closes his eyes as I pour water over his brown hair and ears. I watch in fascination as the water turns a muddy shade of brown as well.

As I scrub the dirt and trash out of his hair, I'm awed at the fact his hair and fur is a soft grey color.

He whimpers when I take my hand off of his head.

"Please, keep petting me." He whines.

"I- I have to get you clothes. Finish up, yeah? I made a meal while you were sleeping." I don't respond to his request and leave quickly.
