The bright sun shone through the dusty window in my attic bedroom. I heard the rooster crow in the distance, starting the new day. I groaned and rolled over to look at the clock on my bedside table. The clock read 5 am. Though I have been living with my grandparents for about 8 years now I still haven't gotten used to the waking up early thing.
About 8 years ago, my parents were killed. I was with them when it happened, but that night is still blurry. All I can remember is my mom yelling for me to run and a flash of multicolored light. Ever since then, I've been living with my grandparents, Wendy and George Grey.
After pulling the covers off, I sit up and stretch. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I stand up and walk to my door. When I walk down the stairs from my attic, I see that my grandparents are still asleep and I head to the back door. I open the door and look at the beautiful view in front of me. The sunrise coming up above the mountain drapes a light pink hue on the valley. The horses are grazing in the Paddock below.
I take a deep breath of fresh air and stretch one more time before I start my daily chores. I pull my boots on and walk down to the barn. The barn doesn't look like much with its slightly crooked doors and the red paint that is peeling from age and weathering. I tug at the old barn doors and find that they are a little hard to open. I take a mental note to fix that later.
After pulling all the doors open, I go to work cleaning the stalls and putting water in the buckets. After all the stalls are clean I go to the feed room and mix up the feed for our horses. Putting all the feed in each bin, I head to the gate to let the horses in. I'm two feet from the gate when I hear my granny yell from the back porch.
"Autumn honey, when you're done out there, breakfast is ready" as soon as those words left her mouth, my stomach growled. I giggled to myself, yelling back I said, "Ok, granny I'll be there in a sec." I opened the gate and whistled, all 9 of our horses came galloping in, all trying to get in first. I rolled my eyes and closed each stall door behind each horse then walked up to the house.
When I came in the back door my granny and gramps were sitting on either side of the table, eating breakfast. Spread all over the table was an assortment of food: eggs, bacon, pancakes, and oranges. I sat down in my usual chair and dug in. But before I could even bring a single forkful of goodness to my mouth, somebody knocked on the door.
"Autumn, can you get that, dear." I looked at her then put my fork down and went to the door. I opened the door thinking it was the paper boy, Bret Michaels. But it wasn't the paperboy at all. There standing on the front porch was a tall, handsome boy about 17. He had dirty blonde hair that was perfectly messy and bright green eyes.
He looked me up and down then gave me a smirk that out smirked them all. He was definitely trouble, but hey I like trouble.
"Hello, my name is Shane Harper. I'm sorry for the disturbance. Are you Autumn Grey by chance." He said with a prize-winning smile. My granny walked to the door behind me and looked at the boy outside the door."Yes, she is, may I ask why you are looking for my granddaughter?" My granny questioned with a suspicious look on her face.
"I know the secret you have been keeping from your granddaughter."
