The Beginning

It was December 31, 1999. I remember waiting up for my daddy to come home from work. He promised that he would bring home my favorite, Chinese food, and that we would eat it together while we watch the ball drop. My mommy poured me a tall glass of apple cider and poured herself a glass of wine.
"When you're done with that you're going to take a bath and change into your nighttime clothes, ya hear?" she instructed.
"Okay mommy." I said as a gulped down my apple cider and kissed my mother on the cheek as I hugged her.
I ran upstairs to my room where I grabbed an oversized t-shirt and a pair of basketball shorts. I headed to the bathroom where my mother was running my bath water.
"I added some oils and bath salt, made it just the way you like it," she said smiling at me.
"Thank you, mommy, I love you," I said
"I love you too baby," she said as she exited the bathroom closing the door behind her.

My mother was what they called a southern belle. She met my father when she was a sophomore in high school, he was a senior. My daddy was a police officer and my mother was a nurse, so life was pretty good for me. I mean, not too many black kids grew up with both of their parents living in the same house, let alone both of them having good jobs.

I heard daddy come in and I quickly hurried and finished my bath, got dressed, and ran down stairs to where he was and jumped in his arms.
"PRINCESS!" he screamed, hugging me tightly. "Are you ready to see the ball drop?" I nodded excitedly. Daddy pulled everyone's food out of the bag he had been holding. He handed me my favorite: shrimp lo me in with a side of chicken wings. He gave mommy her food and then took his out as we all sat on the couch and watched the New Year's Eve countdown.
"How was your day?" Daddy asked my mother.
"Great," Mommy said sarcastically while rolling her eyes.
"Daddy," I said interrupting them, as  I felt the tension begin to rise. Then all I heard was the tv: "5,4,3,2,1 HAPPY NEW YEAR"
"Happy New Year baby" daddy said as he kissed my forehead.
"Happy New Year Daddy, Happy New Year Mommy," I told them before finishing my food and heading to bed.
