I took in another last drag from my cigarette and leaned over the edge of my sorority house's balcony's railing. Another party was raging on down the stairs and I could smell the stench of beer and weed from the second story. I know should go down and talk to people and have a good time, but I couldn't bring myself down the liquor stained stairs.
I heard my door open behind me and a drunken pledge strolled in. She waved to me and stumbled around the room until she got to my bed. "Oooooh, Lana." She called for me. I sighed and leaned against the door frame, watching her roll on my bed, quietly praying she wouldn't puke on the sheets.
"Yesss, Katie-dear?" I smiled at her. She obviously just had gotten done with initiation. I could smell the scent of vodka all the way from where I was standing. I flicked a piece of red hair that covered my plain brown eyes.
"Why is your name Lana?" she looked over to me with all seriousness. I didn't know if I should give her a sarcastic reasoning or just be blunt, but either way I tried to cover my laughed with my free hand.
"Well, my name is Lana because my parents chose it for me." I flicked the end of my cigarette, sending ashed on the balcony floor.
"That's so...interestinging." She slurred, "why aren't you down with Becky and Diane? They've been looking for you all night." she exaggerated.
"Oh, I'm just exhausted," I said, bringing the cigarette to my lips again. To tell the truth, I really wasn't extremely tired. The boys always grabbing at your waist and the drama that always seemed to occur because someone thinks that someone stole someone's boyfriend or girlfriend for whatever, the same incidents were getting old to me. For a pledge, this was exciting and interesting since this would be the first time they would partake in drama since their senior year in high school. Also, I was very hungover from last night after watching movies with Diane and Becky. Also, I was a bit hungover from yesterday's movie night with Diane and Becky.
Katie stared over at me with half-lidded eyes, she was silent for a moment. "Well, I still think you should come down there with me." She sat up and wobbled for a moment before taking to her feet. "Won't you come with me, Lana Bama?"
I nodded my head to her and flicked the half burnt cigarette off the balcony before I followed Katie's unsure footsteps down the stairs. I helped her down the first few stairs due to her nearly falling down. She smiled at me and began talking about how she met some guy tonight and how he was the hottest guy she's ever seen and how he was studying something at whatever school in another state over. I hardly focused on her words, she kept mixing them and slurring them together that they ended up sounding like complete gibberish.
When we ended up getting down the stairs, she grabbed my chin and planted a kiss on my cheek. I smiled and told her to have fun. Katie grinned at me ear to ear and told me she'd be with the guy she mentioned to me. Her long blonde hair flowed back behind her like a golden waterfall. Katie was my favorite pledge out of all the years I've been a part of the sorority, Kappa Alpha Phi. She was genuine and sweet, unlike a lot of the pledges that had joined this year. Not that they were terrible people or anything, it's just you can tell when someone isn't genuine. I scanned the room looking out for girls who were getting into unwanted situations. It wasn't unusual to glance and find a girl or two being corned by one of the fraternity boys. It wasn't my job to make sure none of the girls were in a dangerous situation since we have certain girls that look out for that, but it sure made me feel a lot better when I did keep an eye out for them.
Across the floor, Diane and Becky sat on the kitchen table with glass mugs filled with a brown substance which I'd assume was beer. Diane took a sip and laughed at her boyfriend, Chris as he spat out some half-assed joke. I made my way through the sea of bodies which moved to the beat of the music that played through the speakers. Becky slammed her mug down and ran to give me a hug. I let her embrace me. "Oh, Lana we've been looking for you all night, where have you been?" She said excitedly.
