Remus hurried down the corridor, desperate not to be late for potions, he couldn't bear to disappoint Slughorn. Not after last lesson. Why hadn't he just gone when the others had, he'd simply had to hang back and double check his homework, which had been perfect anyway as it always was. He rounded a corner and leapt down the marble staircase into the entrance hall. He had only two minutes till the bell would go. He bounded down another flight of steps into the dungeons and burst through the old oak door into Slughorn's classroom, his chest heaving as he gasped for breath.
"Ah! Lupin! Just in time dear boy." Slughorn exclaimed, " Hurry up now and take your seat, we've got a rather interesting lesson today."
Remus scanned the classroom amd located his friends in their usual seats on the back row. He sidled over and slipped into a spare place between Sirius and Peter. He whipped his potions book out of his bag and nudged Peter to get the right page number. When he saw the chapter title his stomach jumped into his throat amd he glance breifly at Sirius sat on his left. This wouldn't be a good lesson.
"Now," Slughorn's voice boomed across the classroom, " we shall be studying a curious little potion today and, in my opinion, perhaps the most dangerous potion in existance. Take a look in the cauldron here and see if you can tell me what it is."
The whole class sat a little straighter as they strained to see the potion shown at the front. A sickly pink shade in colour the potion first looked unappealing but then the smell wafted across the classroom and something in Remus's mind clicked. He cautiously raised his hand.
"Yes, Lupin?" Slughorn said,
"It's Armormentia." Lupin replied, "A powerful love potion."
"Correct!" Beamed slughorn, "now dear boy, can you tell me any of the properties of Amormentia?"
"Well its unique to each witch or wizard. Its fumes give of the scent of whats most appealing to the individual. For example, I smell... chocolate, and fresh mint, and..."
Remus paused.
"Yes dear boy?" Slughorn urged,
"And... dog." Remus finished.
He felt himself going red and could feel Sirius watching him out of the corner of his eye. He knew he shouldn't have offered an answer. He'd screwed up everything now.
As soon as the class ended Remus shoved everything into his bag and streaked out of the classroom, unwilling to face his friends and the humiliation the class had brought him. Not that he'd have any friends after this. He'd simply had to spoil everything. Without really paying attention to where he was going Remus hurried through the halls of Hogwarts, eventually ducking into a bathroom on the fourth floor. Praying no one would walk in and find him he walked over to the sink and bent over it. Silently, a solitary tear rolled down his cheek and splashed into the basin. And then, suddenly, he couldn't hold back anymore and tears began to fall thick and fast.
After a few minutes the door creaked open. Remus held his breath, hoping whoever it was would just go away, when a familiar voice said:
"Re?"
Remus froze. It was Sirius, no doubt come to yell at him. He stayed where he was, unmoving as heavy footfalls approached from behind and a gentle hand reached up and touched his back.
"Remus?" Whisphered Sirius, " Are you alright, you ran out after potions and I didn't know where you'd gone."
Remus tried to shrug off Sirius's hand and turn away but Sirius, being the smaller of the two, slipped under his arm and turned Remus to face him.
"Remus. Have - have you been crying?" Sirius said, and Remus caught sight of himself in the mirror. His eyes were red and swollen. His cheeks were blotchy and tearstained and his fringe was wet from where it had hung over his eyes. There was no use im lying. Sirius would only see roght through it. Slowly he nodded.
And then Sirius did something Remus had not expected. He snaked his arms around Remus's waist and pulled him close.
"You know i don't hate you right?" The boy whispered, and Remus broke. He buroed his face in Sirius hair and tired desperately to hold back the tears that had jumped into his eyes. Sirius wasn't here to yell at him. He didn't despise him. Remus didn't think he'd ever felt more relieved in his life.
The two boys stood, wrapped in a tight embrace until Remus felt ready to confront his fears. Remus and Sirius had had an ongoing flirty sort of friendship for a long time, perhaps even years, but neither had ever confronted the other on it. Finally, after what seemed like hours but could only have been moments, Sirius spoke.
"Do you know what I smelled from the potion?" He asked, and Remus shook his head.
"I smelt. Fresh parchment, old woolen jumpers, hot chocolate, and shaving foam. In other words. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I smelt you Re."
Remus flushed red and suddenly found he could no longer avert his eyes. He looked down into Sirius eyes, which were shining with anticipation and then, without thinking, he placed his hand under Sirius's chin, gently tilting it upward, as he leaned in for a soft kiss.
