It's melting hot as I walk to work, and I sigh in content as the air conditioning hits me as soon as I walk in through the sliding doors.
"Hey, Cooper!" I giggle as the local shop's main and forever dog jumps up at me excitedly.
"Hey, Theo." My boss, Darren waves.
I nod and make my way to the back so I can get my name tag and a few dishes for the new cats we're getting today.
"Someone is bringing in a dog... He was hit by a car. Broken leg." Darren fills me in, after his phone call.
"Right on it. I'll be preping in the back, bring him right out back once He's here." I stumble out. I love animals so much and it hurts me to even hear one whining.
I'm getting out sponges and a gown so I can do surgery if needed. I know there will be blood so I'm getting ready for the worst. I've never lost an animal in my care, and today won't be the day. I just can't imagine it.
"Theo! I need your help." Darren Grumbles.
I make my way to my boss and wish I would have mentally prepared myself for what I was about to see.
"Uh... Is this... The- D-dog?" I choke.
It looks nothing like one. Judging by the way it's legs are folded, I can already tell there are bones broken. This is not I was expecting...
He nods and takes the dog to the back, while I look up at a very distressed owner. "W- Will, My dog... Will he be okay?"
"He'll be fine, I've never lost any animal in my care." I promise though I have my doubts. I have never lost any animal. But also, I have never had to work on anything like this.
"Thank you... Theo." He points at my name tag.
"That's my name, what's yours?" I chuckle.
"Kirkland." He smiles.
"I... Have to get back to your dog. Talk later." I hurry away.
I rush to the back and take a deep breath once I'm inside. Kirkland... Huh. That's unique. I like it. I think of how chiseled his face was, his jet black hair and his ear piercing in his left lobe. About 5'8 with denim and a beanie, his tight black jeans.
Focus Theo!
"Theo, wash your hands, put on gloves and wash those too." Darren states.
"Yes, Sir!" I hurry to the sink.
Once I've done that, I make my way over to the Golden Retriever lying on the table, He's bloody and his leg is twisted, his head has blood coming from it. 'Don't panic Theo, you can do this.'
We sedate the dog and take off his collar, "Dipper." I smile.
"Huh?" Darren asks.
"Dipper, the dogs name." I chuckle.
He forms a silent "O" and focuses on the dog.
After a few hours of cuts and casts later, Dipper is set on a big clean dog bed. He looks warm and toasty after being cleaned up from blood, his injures will take awhile to heal and he won't be able to stand for a bit, so we'll have to keep him here and help him.
I thought we were going to lose him, In all honesty. I've never had anything so bad.
I walk out of the back and see that Kirkland is still here and hadn't gone home.
He looks at me and his eyes widen and fill with tears.
"Is..."
"He's fine. He's sleeping right now, the sedative will wear off in a few hours." I state.
He sighs in relief but his eyes travels all over my body, and then back to my face fear written all over. "I'd hug you... But you're covered in blood."
I look down at myself and realise that I'm still in my gown. "Shit."
"One moment, please." I mutter in embarrassment as I walk to the back.
"I was about to tell you that you forgot your gown... But I guess I didn't have too." Darren chuckles. I always forget to change every single time. And at some point, I scared a little Asian boy with just a small stain of blood.
"Kirkland, did." I sighed.
"He's a good looking fellow."
"Huh?" I scrunch my eyebrows.
"He's good looking, I can see your eyes all over him."
Darren is about 30 with a wife and two kids, He's probably the coolest boss ever, doesn't really have to come in but chooses too. He has brown hair and a tattoo that says "Fuck the world" His 5'6 figure stands over me by 3 inches and his muscles overtake me by a mile.
"Mhm." I nod.
"His dog is awake, should we let him see him?" He asks.
"I think he would love that."
"Kirkland, do you want to see your dog?" I ask.
"Yes, please!" He smiles nervously.
We walk into the room with the bed and slowly approach a now waking Dipper.
"H-hey buddy." He whispers.
"You're gonna be fine... I promise."
The certainty in his voice sends shivers down my spine. How can he be so sure? I've never lost an animal in my care, but the promise itself feels strong, highlighting the strong bond between the two. I look away, wanting to leave them with their special moment immediately.
"Th-thanks... Thank you so much. " He chokes out.
