The day had started well. My friends and I had decided to take the back roads to the beach. It’d gone downhill after the van started to run out of gas. On the way to find gas my friend decided to pick up a hitch hiker despite my objections. Now we were running for our lives. The hitch hiker had set us up. I knew something was off about him but did anyone listen? No.
I currently hid in a tangle of trees listening to heavy footsteps I dared to catch a glimpse. The man was big and tall. The chainsaw in his hands quiet for now. His face covered by a mask, that I realized was another person’s face.
He didn’t notice me and walked away. When the coast was clear I left the scene as quietly and quickly as I could. I didn’t see the trap but I sure felt it snap around my ankle. I screamed in pain. I could hear something big moving in the forest not that far away and I tried my best to free myself from the trap. Failing miserably I felt tears form in my eyes. The masked man from before appeared to my left.
“Why are you doing this!? I didn’t do anything to you or your family!” I cried out. He stopped and stood there looking at me. “I didn’t hurt anyone,” I said, starting to sob.
The man cautiously put down the chainsaw but kept it within reach. His hand moved towards the trap and I flinched.
“Please, please I didn’t mean to do anything wrong,” I said. He wimpered at my words and looked down. My mind grasped that I had struck a chord. “I didn’t think anyone would get hurt.”
The man tilted his head and murmerd questioningly.
“I won’t hurt you. I mean it,” I promised. He seemed hesitant as he reached for the trap again.

I remember him starting to release me but now I found myself in a bedroom. There were bones and various types of skulls throughout. I felt unsurprised to see that several were human. I lied in the bed. I noticed that my leg had been bandaged and that I had been chained to one of the bed posts. I reached out and touched my ankle. It hurt like hell and I held back some choice swears.
I heard footsteps approaching. The door opened to the man from before. He carried a plate and a cup. He grunted at me before placing them on the nightstand. He gestured to them and pointed at me.
“Thank you,” I told him. He smiled and squealed, happy with his job well done. I sat up carefully and ate the food. Once I’d finished and told him how good it was he squealed again before grabbing the dishes and leaving the room.

I had been here roughly a week now. My ankle healing slowly. The man turned out to be named Bubba and he treated me kindly. Bubba was a bit like an oversized kid in some ways. He’d made me a bracelet of human teeth to match his yesterday. I started out trying to survive but now found myself growing fond of Bubba. He brought me food regularly as he could and when the other’s were asleep he’d sneak me to the bathroom where I could get cleaned up. Sometimes we would dance and he would twirl me endlessly.
I had lied down to take a nap when I heard Drayton yelling. I couldn’t make out the words but he sure sounded angry. I tried to shut out the sound but found myself feeling more awake.
Afters a few more minutes it got quiet and I heard Bubba’s footsteps approaching the door. His head hung low and he whimpered as he enetered the room. He walked to the bed and sat next to me. I reached out and touched his arm. He flinched and whimpered louder.
“Shut up Bubba,” came Drayton’s voice.
“I’m sorry. Did I hurt you?” I asked in a low voice. Bubba shook his head but I wasn’t sure. I gently pushed up his shirt sleeve, seeing bruises beginning to form. I gasped and my heart skipped a beat.“ Did Drayton do this?”
Bubba nodded once and I felt anger surge through me. If I could better defend myself I would have lept up and beat that other dude but my ankle still bothered me.
I did the only thing I could think of and lifted Bubba’s arm to my lips. I lightly brushed my lips over the bruises. He looked at me, confusion written in his eyes.
“You’re a good man Bubba. You don’t deserve this kind of treatment. You’re such a sweet guy,” I said and he squealed. He lifted his other arm to me and I kissed those bruises as well.
I didn’t know it then but that simple act had changed things between us.
