YOUR SANCTUARY
"When you're lost in the nightmare of life, just hold my hand, and follow the sound of my heartbeat to find sanctuary in my heart."
― Anthony T. Hincks

                                                 1. The Ending Or The Beginning

The snow fell lightly from the sky above, slowly dusting over my hair as I walked from my car to the lawyer's office. It's quiet as I take each step; my feet grow heavy as I reach the door. C.B. Attorney and Law were written in white, but I felt like it should say: The End Of Your Marriage.
I took a deep breath, opened the door, and slowly entered the warm building. The cold Pennsylvania weather leaving as the door shut behind me. I looked up at the clock, 3:24 pm, a little early for the final signing of the divorce papers. It's a hard pill to swallow, being a twenty-six-year-old divorcée. I was married for five years; married fresh out of school to my college boyfriend, Christian Jacobs.

I sign in for the last time as Mrs. Skylar Jacobs and sit down as I wait for my soon to be ex-husband to arrive. Our appointment with Mr. Clarke was to start in fifteen minutes now, yet Chris still wasn't here. That isn't a surprise, not in the lightest. I took a deep sigh and ran my fingers through my chestnut long hair. I decided to curl my hair before work today at the elementary school, yet you can barely tell I did because now it's just loose waves. I still had my work outfit on, just a pair of black slacks, and a purple blouse that was a little too form-fitting for my taste.
I glanced at the door as I saw Chris walk in. He wiped the snow off of his shoes on the rug, probably grumbling how his black loafers were now wet. He was in his typical black suit, blue tie, and black dress coat. I had bought it for Christmas the year before. His dark brown hair glistened from the snow melting on it. His bright blue eyes were not as bright and surrounded with dark circles due to lack of sleep.

Just then the receptionist called for us to head back to see Mr. Clarke. I slowly stood up and walked in front of Chris. My stomach clenching as his eyes watched my every move. I just wanted to cry. This was his fault. He chose to go out and lie in another woman's bed, not I. I took one last deep breath as I entered the room and took a seat farthest from Chris as I possibly could. Mr. Clarke smiled a sad smile at me and put the papers in front of the two of us.

"Just sign where the tabs are, everything should be finalized in the next thirty days. " His warm voice almost echoed throughout the eerily quiet room.

I quickly signed my name so I could leave sooner and handed the papers to him. He nodded and bid me farewell as I hastily walked out the door to my car. As I sat there, trying to start my 2008 Chevy Impala, I let a few tears slip from my hazel colored eyes. Of course, this would be the time that my car's battery decided to die on me. Just then I heard a tap on my window, and when I looked up Chris was there with his hands in his pockets.

"Do you need me to jump you?" He asked, a cloud coming from the warmth of his breath against the cool air.

"Please," I said, popping up the hood so he could help me.

When my car finally roared to life, I thanked him and began walking to my car. I stopped before getting in and looked at my husband one last time. I can't believe it's officially going to be over in just a month. I blinked back the tears, cleared my throat and opened my car door.

"Sky?" He called out, his window down as he sat in his white 2015 Dodge Ram parked behind my car, blocking me in.

"Yes?"

"Drive safe," He said before rolling up the window and speeding off.

I got in and began driving down the long winding road to our...well my house. At least he let me keep it. He chose to relocate his job so I could stay here close to my family. So I guess he wasn't a complete jerk...when he wanted to be. It was now almost 5:00 pm and I still had to make sure the rest of his things were put in boxes when I got to our house.
