Letting out a tired groan as she dropped her bags into the unfamiliar room; one which she would have to familiarize herself with for the next years to come depending on how things went;
Nicole lifted her hand up to her throat and massaged gently, her throat felt dry and she needed water.
Seeing as this was a new place and her Dad had not yet gone grocery shopping or told her to,she made her way to the kitchen, her eyes darting around before landing on the sink.
Thanking her stars, she sighed and walked over to where the sink was situated just below the window.
She took out one of the plastic cups stacked on each other and made to open the tap and cussed when nothing came out.
"Aarrrgghhh! Could this day get any worse?! How can a house as big as this not have clean running water?!" She yelled to no one in particular.
She began to remember her previous residence, the third house she had lived in a span of 7 years. She wasn't so attached to it but everything had been in place from the first day
Her former house had been a duplex in the highbrow area of Port Harcourt.
It was their property, but they had to move to Lagos because her Dad wanted to oversee the Lagos branch of their food and beverages production company.
While this house was bigger, beautiful, more spacious and located on the beautiful Banana Island - a very high brow area of the Lagos Island, she viewed the large house as a tent at that moment in the fit of her thirst and fatigue.
She was terribly thirsty and she needed to get water.
Her father had left immediately the moving truck arrived.
She looked at her watch and saw that the time was 09:17 am,she did not understand why he had to leave so early for work.
He owned his company and could arrive at any time he wanted. In fact, they'd still be living large for more than 20 years if forbid, something should perhaps happen to the company.
But Nicole knew there was a whole other reason as to why he did not spend a lot of time with her.
Grabbing her wallet and keys which she had dropped on the counter, she made her way outside the large double doors and made sure to securely shut the door behind her. Not that it made a difference considering the high tech security that guarded the house.
Dressed in blue denim shorts,a tank top and flip flops which she had slipped on in a hurry, she walked tiredly to her black Mercedes parked in the large compound.
She had wanted to drive out into town but she thought against it and instead, walked out of the large silver coloured gates which opened with a click of a button on the remote control that had been attached to her key holder.
She wanted to familiarize herself with the street in which she was going to be living in as she stepped out into the sunny summer morning hoping to find a small grocery store around where she could purchase some bottled water, some chocolates and snacks pending the time she was going to go full shopping to stock up the house.
She scanned the quiet surroundings as she kept walking keeping her eyes open for a store. Not a lot of activities was happening on the street and she liked that.
On each side of the road, prominently stood out large beautiful houses, the architectural designs - something beautiful to behold.
In one of the brief conversations she had with her father before they moved when she had requested for more details about their new place,he had told her that big shots with great businesses who barely had time to stay at home were the ones who mostly occupied the area.
She felt it manifest as she felt the peace and silence. This was Nicole's style, she hated noisy places and seemed to thrive more in places where she could hear her own breath.
Seeing that she had come to the end of her own street and had yet to come across a store, she turned left and kept on walking.
It had not been less than 6 minutes of more walking that she had begun to regret her decision of stepping out on foot. The sun was scorchingly hot and burnt her skin making her sweat like someone who just ran a marathon. It made her vision blurry as well as she had not taken her glasses with her.
Nicole decided it was pointless looking for a store as she thought that her chances of finding a store around was near to none. This was a purely residential area after all.
It was better if she got back home to her car and drove out to the city, she thought.
Picking her pace, she turned around and began to run.
"Fuck!"
She cursed loudly as she stumbled into a hard surface. She looked down and saw a pair of converse.
"Can't you watch where the hell you're going!" She spat out angrily while massaging her forehead which was now throbbing painfully from the contact.
She raised up her head to meet the one who had caused her so much pain preparing to let out all her frustrations on them.
"Can't -----" Nicole struggled to find the words as she looked into the dark brown eyes of the most beautiful man she had ever seen.
The man's smoldering gaze met hers and she darted her tongue out to lick her dry lips. What a snack... She thought
Standing before her was a delicious looking tall dark skinned man with lovely dark rich hair on his head and face which ran across his jawline as beards. Not too much, and not too small beards, just the way I like it,I wonder how it feels to the touch.
His dark caramel skin which was covered in sweat glistened in the sunlight and she felt an overwhelming urge to run her hands across his bare chest. He was shirtless and sort of looked familiar.
"Take a picture,it'll last longer" he spoke in a deep baritone sexy voice.
That appeared to do the magic as she is suddenly transported out of her trance. She inwardly smacked herself. She had been blatantly staring without shame. She takes in his full appearance and he is in running shorts and a converse. Who the fuck goes running at 9 in the morning
"Don't you mean,oh, 'I'm sorry, are you hurt?" She attempted to yell out loud to his face but her voice betrayed her as it came out in a cracked inaudible whisper.
"Did you say something?" Alex smirked. She did not like him instantly, what a cocky bastard! All for a bottle of water. Ugh! He would not completely ruin her morning. She glared at him -- if looks could kill,Alex knew he'd be five feet below the ground.
She said nothing and instead stepped aside ready to stomp off when he spoke.
"Alright miss cranky.,I wonder what pissed in your pants this morning,I'm sorry. Do you have a pen so I could maybe sign somewhere to make it up to you?"
Nicole's jaw dropped to the floor. Who did he think he was! He wore an amused smile and she wanted nothing more than to wipe the smile off his face with a slap.
She gritted her teeth together and pulled off the fakest grin she could while stepping closer to him. His face pulled into confusion and before he could make out what was happening, she raised her leg and kicked him in the balls. He yelled out loud and dropped to his knees.
Nicole could not help the shoulder shaking laughter that came out of her mouth as she ran off fast back to her home. She did not turn back or want to wait to know what he would do to her.
It was when she reached her gate that she remembered that she had gone out in an attempt to quench her thirst. Come to think of it,she wasn't even feeling that thirsty anymore.
