I live with my parents, for now.
I'll be heading off to college soon to further my education and get a degree. Then I'll get a career and earn my own money. Then I just might be as rich as my father.
My father is Conor Moore, in the top twenty richest men in the country. He made his fortune, and now it's time for me to make my own. My very own money that dad didn't give me. That'll be awesome.
"Frances, come down for dinner love."
"Yes mom."
My mother, Christina Moore, married my father before his fortune and stuck along for the ride. There were ups and downs, and they almost divorced. But she stayed, and now we're here.
I head down the steps and make a right, almost running into my twin sister.
"Hey, I was just about to come get you. Dad's hungry so come on."
Susanne Moore, we don't look alike at all.
I follow her to the table and sit. The servant places down my food and drink, then heads back into the kitchen.
"Finally you decided to join us," my father speaks as he lifts his glass,"Congratulations on leaving."
"Conor dear, don't be mean. Frances wants to make a life for herself."
"And I wanted to pass down the family business to her." He cuts his steak and points the knife at me,"Good luck fending for yourself."
"We'll send you money if you need it honey." My mom pats my hand as I watch my father eat.
"She should be grateful for everything I've done for her."
"She is dear, she just wants to make her own money. Start her own life, like you did."
"I came from nothing, she's come from something. If I had that, I would've used my resources."
"She is, by using this opportunity to go to college. You didn't get to remember."
"I know what I did, I was there."
"Yes dear," my mother starts to eat and so do I.
I glance at my sister and see a slight grin on her face. Then I remember what day it is.
I smile as I cut my food.
"The hell are you smiling for?" My dad goes back to pointing a knife at me.
"I just remembered something."
"What?" He growls at me.
"It's our birthday." I stare at him as his features change to realization, "You forgot?"
"Yea, I'll throw a party for you later."
I look at my mom and see her grin at me. She mouths"I remembered" to me.
I smile and go back to eating.
...
I type out the last few words of my essay and turn in the paper to the college admissions.
There's a knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in."
My sister's head peaks through,"Get dressed," she grins.
"Why?"
She slowly opens the door more and stands straight. Her dark brown hair back in a bun and a knee length silver dress on, her light brown eyes pop with the make-up she has on,"Because."
"Because why?"
"It'll be fun to dress up, like me." She grins and twirls around,"See, pretty."
"Yea."
"So do it, I'll apply your make-up."
I roll my eyes and stand,"Fine."
"Yay!" She runs over to my closet and pulls out a sweetheart neckline black dress that stops just above my knees.
"That?"
"Yea, it's cute."
"The back of that dress is open and there's a slit down the side."
"We're turning twenty-two."
"So."
"It's age appropriate."
"So are you and yours isn't like that."
"Because I have a boyfriend and don't need to attract a guy's attention like you."
"Who says that I want someone?"
"I do, I want to go on double dates with you."
"Go with your friends."
"They're mad at me for some reason, I don't care. Oh, I got invited to this party that's supposed to be awesome. Celebrities will be there also, you know like rappers and singers, maybe some models."
"Have fun."
"I need my twin there, stand by my side too so they'll know we're related. Then we drop the twin bomb like yea. Every guy's fantasy."
"Not going." I grab the dress and she turns to the wall as I change.
"Why not? It'll be fun, I get to make more friends and you can meet people too. Maybe even have fun for once."
"I'm done."
She turns around and finds my make-up, grabbing eyeliner and lipstick and such. "You should get out more before you head to college, they'll be lots of parties I'm sure you'll get dragged to and you'll be away from me. I want twin time!"
She starts to put on my make-up, "Spend time with me before you go."
"I plan to, just not at parties. You always leave me alone at those parties and I have to find a place to hide. They're not fun for me."
"I won't this time, none this year because you're leaving."
"Yea right."
"Don't move," she starts to apply lipstick, "I promise, no, I twin promise that I won't leave you at any parties until you go to college. You can talk."
"A twin promise huh?"
"Yes."
"Alright, I can go. To only some."
"Yes! That's all I ask for. I'm done. Take a look in the mirror."
I turn to my mirror and admire her work, "Thanks."
"No problem, now let's get to our birthday party sis."
We head out of my room and down the steps. There are balloons and people everywhere, music booms, and people mingle.
Susanne's friends walk over and start to talk to her.
She listens for a bit and rolls her eyes, makes a sarcastic remark, and grabs my arm, pulling me away.
"What was that?"
"I know what they want, and I'm not giving it to them. It's our birthday and they want to start drama. Not going to happen." She scans the crowd, "There's Jake, I'm going to go talk to him. I'll be around, find someone to talk to. If not, come find me."
"Okay."
She leaves and I stand there looking around.
Men and women dance close to each other while others stand and talk with drinks in their hand.
"Hey," a voice says from behind me. I turn to see a guy about (2in heels) five inches taller than me, I have on heels.
"Hi."
"I'm Isaac, what's your name?"
"Frances."
"Cool, so why are you here?"
"It's my party."
"So you're one of the birthday girls? Congratulations. How old are you turning?"
"Twenty-two."
"Twenty-two, I remember that age. I was at college at that time, just finishing up my bachelor's degree. A lot of parties, do you like parties?"
"Not really."
"Oh, how do you get through them?"
"I just walk around and find something to do. How old are you?"
"Twenty-five."
"You spoke as if you were older."
"I've grown a lot and become wiser."
"So you were a partier and wild when you were younger?"
"Yea, then I had to get a job. I say job because I have to do it, I don't enjoy it."
"Will you get a career?"
"Working on it, I know I should have one by now or still be in college, but things happened."
"Like?"
He grins,"Personal things. Do you know which twin was born first or did your parents forget?"
I laugh,"They actually forgot but then looked at our birth certificates and it showed that I was born first."
"Typical."
"What do you mean?"
"Your parents were busy and they forgot which one of you was born first. Mine forgot my birthday a lot, more concerned with company parties and such."
"Rich family?"
"Yup."
"It sucks at times."
"Yea. So now I'm going to start my own life. Be different from them and their life style."
"That's what I'm doing."
"Really?" He smiles,"Glad I found you. None of my friends understand me. I just want to do something for myself you know? Not use my parents."
"That's exactly how I feel! Make my own money and not use the business they have to do it. Just to have something I made, just for me."
"Yea."
His light brown eyes stare into mine, I notice a few grey specks. "Yea."
He looks down,"You don't have a drink, how about we go get one?"
"Sounds good."
He smiles and turns around. I follow him to the drinks table the servants set up and make juice with a little alcohol in it.
I take a sip and watch him make his,"That looks like a lot of work."
"My specialty. Do you want one?"
"No thanks."
"Maybe another time."
He takes a sip and turns to me,"Who threw this party?"
"My mother, and maybe my sister. She knew about it, but I'm not sure."
"What about your dad?"
I pause,"He, forgot."
"I know the feeling, it'll be fine. Just, forget about it and celebrate your birthday." He tosses back his drink,"Good stuff."
I finish off mine and hand it to a servant,"Happy birthday Frances."
"Thank you Mary." She leaves and I glance at Isaac.
"You want to dance?" He stands in front of me.
"Sure."
"Yes or no, make a choice."
"Why yes or no?"
"To make a decision for yourself. Start your journey to your own life by choosing to dance with me by saying yes, or not by telling me no. Choose wisely."
I look away and see my sister all over her boyfriend. "Yes."
He holds out his hand and I take it.
We walk to where the DJ is and he puts his hands above my waist.
I place my arms around his neck and stand a little closer to him.
We sway to the music and he slowly pulls me closer to him. I look up at him making eye contact, he seemingly stares into my soul.
We're about two inches apart when I break eye contact and watch the people around me.
"What did I do to make you stop looking at me?"
I turn back to see him slightly smile at me,"Nothing."
"Then keep looking at me, I like staring into your eyes."
I blush and turn my head.
He laughs,"You're so cute." He pulls me close and hugs me,"Sorry to make you blush. I think I like you."
My face gets hotter and I bite my lip.
He pulls away,"You want to stop dancing?"
"I-"
"FRANCES!!" I hear my sister yell my name.
"Frances, who is that?" She grins at me.
"That's Isaac."
"Sorry to interrupt but we have to cut our cake." She looks back and forth between us two.
"Okay, uh bye."
"I'll see you later."
I walk away with Susanne to the ballroom where there's a table with a huge cake on it.
I see mom and dad stand next to it.
"Happy birthday Frances and Susanne," mom says.
"Thanks," we say in unison.
"Cut your cake, I bought presents," dad says.
Mary hands us each a knife and we cut the cake while photos of us are being taken.
Mary takes back the knives and cuts us each a slice.
We take our cake to the living room where there are presents.
We sit next to each other on the couch and open them.
Susanne finds the keys to a new car and more dresses for her to wear.
I have keys to a new car, clothes, and a new credit card.
"Thanks," we once again speak in unison.
"You'll need that for when you go off to college," dad says,"since I can't give it to you in person anymore."
I breathe out,"Thanks dad."
"Now go back to partying."
Susanne stands fast and walks away.
The servants grab our things and put them into separate bags.
I walk away and head back to the party looking for Isaac.
I can't find him anywhere.
Susanne comes over to me,"Hey, your boyfriend left."
I blush a little,"He's not my boyfriend."
"Uh huh, sure. You two did look cute together."
I glance at the clock,"It's two in the morning."
"Yea, time flies when you're having fun."
"Oh god."
The DJ stops the music and starts to pack up.
People leave out quickly, knowing dad.
Soon the place is empty, the servants leave out. Only about three staying because they have rooms here.
Susanne and I walk up the stairs but stop when we hear the door open.
Our parents stand next to the bottom of the steps facing the door, my mother on my dad's arm.
"The party is over," my dad says.
I see someone walk closer to them and stop.
It's Isaac. His shirt is unbuttoned at the top and his tie loose, hair messy. "Oh really? How about we start another one?"
A servant stands beside us as we watch.
Isaac quickly removes his hand from his pocket and points it at my dad, then my mom.
I hear two bangs and my parents fall, their brains splashed on the floor.
Susanne screams and I stare shocked and afraid.
He looks up at me and grins,"I told you I'll see you later."
