My breaths are shaking as I sit on the curb, watching as they try their best to revive Mateo. My Mateo. "Dammit, Mateo. You promised me you wouldn't leave. You promised me that would stay on our safety island. You promised God dammit!" I scolded the body bag in front of me. "Please, Mateo. Please, get up." The tears wouldn't stop rolling. This couldn't be real. This wasn't real. I wasn't going to accept it. Without Mateo, there is no world for me. I'm not going on without him. The neighbors are giving me pitied looks as the firefighters fight against the flames that are pouring out of the apartment. I was shielding the bag as I sobbed. My Mateo. My hero.
I jumped as something moved, and I looked to the bushes. They were perfectly still. I looked to my other side, there was no one there. I looked down. The body bag was moving. The body bag with my dead boyfriend inside it was moving. I sat there in shock, staring at the bag for a solid minute before unzipping it, and it came Mateo, coughing and sputtering and an absolute mess. I was sobbing again, and he was looking at me in disbelief, then looked at himself, at the burns that covered his body.
"What the hell happened?" He rasped before coughing once more.
"You broke your damn promise! That's what happened!" I snapped, and he flinched back. "I thought I lost you, you asshole!" He was looking at me with sorrow-filled eyes.
"I'm sorry... I forgot about the stove and.." He started tearing up. Shit. I hugged him close, just happy to have him in my arms again. The paramedics looked like they had seen a ghost. I'm pretty sure I've seen a ghost myself. I didn't think this was at all possible. He was alive. He was breathing. He was in my arms. It was unfathomable. This couldn't be real. It had to be a dream.
"I thought I lost you.." I sobbed, my arms still around his shaking body. God, he was a mess, but he was my mess. The paramedics pried us apart, getting us both on stretchers.
"It'll be a miracle if you both survive the night." One paramedic said.
"One's already cheated death." Said the other. I could barely hear them over the sound of the heart monitors and the CPAPs that were helping us get oxygen. I felt dizzy, my head spinning as my eyes closed. I didn't lose conciousness.
My hand was holding his, his hand was warm in mine and I could feel his pulse in his fingers. He was alive. My Mateo was alive.

When my eyes finally opened, I was in an ICU room, all kinds of oxygen machines helping me with breathing. It hurt to breathe. My body ached, my mind whirling, trying to remember what happened.
Mateo.
Where is Mateo? I began to panic, getting up from the bed and taking off the mask, running out into the hall. I was still in my clothes from before, and they were covered in soot and smelled like smoke. A nurse saw me, and started trying to get me to go get back in bed. "No, where's Mateo, where is Mateo Torrez?" I demanded.
"He's resting, you should be, too." The nurse said calmly. "Now please-"
"I want to see him, please, take me to him." I was crying again, beyond worried.
"You need to rest." The nurse stated. "He's fine, your emotions are all out of whack." I fought against the nurse, hot tears spilling down my cheeks at an alarming rate as my head pounded with a migraine. I was going to hate myself later.
"No! Let me see him, please!" I didn't care how loud I was being, let me wake up the entire hospital, dammit! "Please!"
Finally, the nurse gave up, dropping his arms to his sides. "Fine. Come on. But DO NOT wake him up." He lead me through the halls, opening another ICU door, stepping aside to grant me access to the room. It was quite dark, other than a lamp on a counter being on, as well as some monitors over by the bed.
My shoes clicked against the floor in the almost silent room, and I stopped beside the bed, looking down at the sleeping body who laid there. It was Mateo. He was alive. His body was bandaged in several places due to the burns, but he was also clean. I could actually see his skin, now that it wasn't completely covered in soot. I sat on the chair next to his bed, taking his hand in mine. This hand was untouched by the fire, it was soft and warm in mine, and I felt him squeeze back before I saw his eyes. His beautiful eyes, they were open and looking into mine, he was smiling.
His glasses had broken during the fire, so he couldn't really see, but I doubt he gives a shit. He's just as happy as I am that he's alive. And I love it. I love him. Every single part of him, I love it all. He's going to be with me forever, or so I hope.
No, I know, he's going to be with me forver. Forever and always. I won't let him leave me. Not now, not ever.
