A confession was the last thing he expected out of you.

It was so sudden: you blurted it out while the two of you were eating lunch together at school. The entire thing was not romantic in any way, and it was obvious that there was no preparation involved either.

Saburo wasn't sure whether he liked you or hated you for your boldness. It was both a weakness and a weapon, in a sense that it took people off-guard easily yet you could make many enemies with it.

"I have it already planned out." The sound of your voice cut his thoughts, a stupid grin on your face. "When we get married, we'll have our own place. It'll be surrounded by trees and we'll be able to enjoy a quiet life with our 5 children."

His gaze turned into a sharp glare. 5 children? No way. "We're only 14." He sighed, "That's too far ahead.."

You weren't listening. It was apparent on the look of your face, staring at him with a smile. Saburo sighed yet again for there was no chance of changing your mind.

He definitely didn't like you right now. The you he knew was calm, cool, and sharp. Now it seemed like you were trying to make your life into a shoujo manga. All mushy and soft, it would be easy for him to abandon you here and now.

Except that he didn't.

No matter what complaint he had in his mind, he stayed by your side. Maybe it was because he pitied you. Confessing and immediately getting rejected? He didn't want his closest (and maybe only) friend to get hurt. Or maybe he was being selfish. Couples were more prone to arguments, which would mean that you would leave him someday.

He didn't want that.

Even as you parted ways on the walk home, he was debating with himself whether he liked you back or not. He was unusually quiet today, to the point that he didn't even argue with Jiro when he tried to provoke him.

"What, do you have girl problems?" Jiro snickered, earning him a glare from his younger brother.

"It's none of your business." Saburo replied, turning away so he wouldn't have to see his brother's face again.

You were full of surprises.

The next day you gave him a new edition of that board game he always wanted to play.

"I saw you checking it out while walking home." You explained. "Maybe we could play together some time!"

How sweet. Saburo was trying his best not to gush over the present, his frown twitching. He rarely got any gifts from anyone, so this struck one of his heartstrings.

"I may not be as good as you," You gave him a sheepish smile. "but if we're to be together forever, I'll have to step up my game."

Pang.

The words 'together forever' repeated themselves in Saburo's mind. This was ridiculous: at such a young age, you were already speaking about your future together. He frowned and turned his head slightly to avoid eye contact, feeling heat rise up to his face.

"Do what you want."

He definitely liked you. Now the words repeated in his mind were 'I like you.' though he couldn't bring himself to say it out loud.

The strange feeling drives people to do things they never thought they would do, and Saburo was of no exception. You flinched as he gave you an awkward hug. He didn't know where to put his hands and was obviously scared of squeezing you too tightly.

You hesitantly hugged back, snuggling into his chest. He was warm and his heart was beating fast and loud.

I guess that answers the question of "like or dislike?".
