The Party

Steve was Bucky's hero. Back in the day, Steve was this sweet and kind man who'd defend anyone in need. Now he's all that and more. Bucky hated to admit it but he loved Steve. Not in a brotherly way like he always tried to make it out to be, but in a romantic way. He knew that things were different now then what they were in the 40's but he just couldn't tell Steve. Steve would hate him. Steve was the only reason he could stand living the life that was given to him. The only person who knew about Bucky's infatuation with Steve was Natasha. Nat was very supportive of Bucky and was always there for him. Which is why it shouldn't have been a surprise when he found himself being locked in an empty room with Steve, by none other than Nat. It was supposed to be a regular party that Stark was throwing a party for another victory. But now, his feelings are surfacing as he looks at Steve, confused as always. His skin glowing in the artificial light. His hair disheveled from the chaos that was supposed to be a party. Bucky let out a long sigh. He was going to kill Natasha when he gets out. The sigh drew the attention of Steve, who changed from confused to concerned in a matter of seconds. God, his eyes... The way his eyebrows scrunched together, making him look like a puppy. There's no denying it, he's helplessly in love. In a swift motion, Bucky began walking to the window in the room. He pulled the silky curtains back. He still could never get used to how he only feels the texture with one hand, when he was grabbing it with both. It was like, when a bottle of water falls on its side, all of the water goes to that side, and the other side is left... empty. That is what Bucky felt like, a tipped over water bottle. With a deep breath in, he found the courage to say something.

"Steve," Bucky started, his nerves spiking. A hum of acknowledgement gave him a little boost. "Did you know that two boys can love each other now?" Buck finished, still staring out the window. His long hair tied up in a man bun. He bit his lip, anxiously awaiting the response.

"Yes, Buck, I've heard," Steve answered in his gentle voice he always used when talking to him. Bucky continued staring out at the glowing city.

"It's uh, pretty nice, isn't it? People finally being able to love who they love," Bucky supplied. He could feel Steve come up beside him, but looking at his face, not the city. Finally, Steve averted his eyes to the city.

"Yeah, it is," Steve replied. It wasn't uncommon for Bucky to bring up random and deep topics like this when they're alone. Bucky's voice got caught in his throat, the anxiety trying to push it down further and further. A strangled sort of noise rose from his throat, which he quickly cleared to avoid suspicion.

"Steve, do you uh, do you like me?" the words fell out before he could stop them. Steve looked taken aback.

"What? Of course I like you Buck, you're my best friend!" Bucky couldn't help the sad laugh that found its way out of the pits of his emotions. Steve was always like that, oblivious to things that weren't glowing in bold letters.

"But, more than that, Steve," Bucky was hanging on to a thread of hope. Bucky was on the very verge of tears. He was terrified.

"Brotherly?" Steve asked. Bucky couldn't help as the tears streaked down. He finally turned to face the man.

Steve's eyes burned with concern as he wiped a tear from Bucky's cheek. Bucky clasped his hand on Steve's while it was still on his cheek. He could feel the warmth, the heartbeat. He could feel the gentleness of the touch. He wanted to savor it before it all went bad, before Steve never wanted to see him again. The thought brought more tears.

"Steve, I love you... A lot. And, I can't hold it anymore. You're more than a brother to me. I want the world to know that you're mine, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," Bucky broke down crying, harder. And pulled away from Steve. He didn't dare look at his face, knowing the look of disgust would most likely be evident. But a soft laugh broke the silence.

"Oh, Buck, that's what you were trying to ask? I love you too you knucklehead," Steve pulled him into a hug and Bucky's tears of shame, quickly turned to joy. Steve loved him. Steve still wanted to see him. This day couldn't get any better than this. Now, he decided, he was going to buy Nat a bunch of her favorite chocolate.

Bucky texted Nat on his flip phone that they wanted out of the room they were locked in. She later unlocked the door and let the two men out of the room to join the rest of the crew at the party. Bucky stayed behind for a little bit to give Nat a hug, then quickly joined Steve. He walked to the outdoor patio where the party was. He saw Thor trying to push Loki to dance with everybody else, Peter and Shuri trying to prank everybody (Mostly T'Challa), and Wanda and Vision slow dancing together even though the music at the time was not at all romantic in anyway. Nat walked up to Tony who was in control of the music and told him to play a 40's slow dance song for the two men.

"Buck, may I have this dance?" Steve asked gently in a voice softer than cotton. Steve held his hand out asking for approval. Bucky took his hand and began to dance with the love of his life, laughing with every mishap with the slow rhythm that they were dancing to. Steve leaned in and kissed Bucky. His lips were soft and gentle. They held their kiss for what seemed like a lifetime, forgetting that everyone that they knew were there and most likely watching, but they didn't care, because after what seemed like a lifetime, they were finally together. Their lips finally parted and their eyes looked around the patio and found Nat holding up two thumbs and Shuri wheezing while Peter was mimicking them kissing by holding his shoulders and making kissing noises. Bucky laughed and blushed at what Peter was doing. Peter then pushed himself into Steve and Bucky asking to dance with them. Steve reluctantly accepted. Shuri recorded the whole thing while dying with laughter and Loki and Thor just kept talking about how cute they were. This was the best night of Bucky and Steve's lives so far and they wish that it never ended.
