Torn

Chapter 1

Bree pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and clicked the home button. The time read 4:57- which was 27 minutes after her and Kaitlyn were supposed to meet to work on the homecoming float. They signed up to do it together last week, and the dance was in 6 days so they had to hurry.

But as usual, Kaitlyn didn't show up. This wasn't uncommon for Bree, Kaitlyn was always busy with boyfriend, friend, or school troubles. Bree had learned to put up with it over time, and she wasn't about to let Kaitlyn go since she was her only real friend.

It wasn't always like that though, Bree used to have Adam and Chase too. That is, until Leo and Tasha entered the picture.

When Bree was only 9 months old, she was adopted by a man named Donald Davenport along with 2 other boys- Adam and Chase. They were never a family, but Adam and Chase were like her brothers. Once the 3 lab rats could walk, Mr. Davenport implanted them with bionic abilities. Bree possessed super speed, Adam super strength, and Chase super smarts. They trained together in the lab for 11 years- never once experiencing a real childhood or a normal teenage life. Bree didn't mind though, she liked just having them in her life- they were all she needed. But when Mr. Davenport fell in love with Tasha Dooley, everything changed.

They dated for only 6 months before he proposed to her and she accepted. They got married on Bree's 14th birthday. Once she and her son, Leo moved in, they discovered us living in the basement. Leo convinced Big D to enroll us in what would soon be our biggest challenge yet- high school. Bree was beyond excited to experience a normal teenage life, but at that point she had no idea how it would wreck her friendship with Adam and Chase.

After just one semester at Mission Creek High, all 3 lab rats had brand new shiny labels. Adam mingled with the jocks, and used his super strength to become the star quarterback and wrestler for the school. Chase flew under the radar, becoming known as a "geek." He spent his time studying and being picked on by Adam and his airhead jock friends. As for Bree, she joined the art and drama clubs and befriended Kaitlyn. These were the labels that they were given, and the lab rats rarely did anything to mess them up.

The only time they actually spoke to one another was around Mr. Davenport, but that was only so he wouldn't think school was interfering with their missions. Home life was awful, the lab rats barely acted like the cared about each other at all. They occasionally started conversations with Leo, however.

Bree walked 5 blocks from the library to the mansion she lived on at the corner of Maple Street. When she walked in she dropped her boxes off on the dining room table and scanned the downstairs premises. Adam, as usual, was plopped on the couch snuggling a football and watching a wrestling match. Leo was eating a bowl of Lucky Charms and playing games on his phone. Chase was nowhere to be found.

"Hey Leo, have you seen Chase?" Bree asked, distracting Leo from his very interesting bowl of cereal. "I need him to help me, or build for me my homecoming float."

Leo looked up and Bree could immediately sense something was wrong. His eyes were widened, and Leo never widened his eyes unless something was wrong or he was hopelessly flirting with Janell- and she was nowhere to be seen.

"Didn't you hear? Chase got dumped hard today. Hasn't left the lab in hours."

Bree knew she wasn't supposed to care, but she did. A lot.

She immediately walked down the long hallway and stopped once she reached a Mona Lisa copy and a blank wall. Bree lifted the painting off the wall and placed her finger on an electronic fingerprint scanner that was hidden behind the painting. Just then, 2 elevator doors appeared with a Davenport Industries crest on them. Bree stepped inside and pressed the 'B2' button.
