In my first life, I had to fight my way out of my shell, in a literal meaning.

My short snout poked out of my eggshell, and my glazed eyes met nothing but blurred figures. Somehow, I knew that I would be released into the world alone, knowing I would only be able to protect myself, as nobody would protect me.

When I saw a blurred figure reach out to me, I lashed out and my instincts caused me to clench my jaws into it. I then realised, I had no fangs to attack with. I was completely defenceless.

But instead of an attack, which I had anticipated would end my life then and there, the figure reached out to me again, despite my attempts in attacking. It lifted me from the soft dirt which I had touched as soon as I emerged from my shell, and held me. The warmth hit me immediately, and the bell-like giggles from the creature came to my attention.

I looked up curiously, and I looked into the most beautiful shade of blue I had ever seen, nothing like the darkness I experienced in my egg.

"I'm going to take good care of you," a voice whispered, those big blue spheres squinting. "I promise, Ana."

Ana?

Who is Ana?

Is it...me?

Ana...

Ana...

I looked up at that beautiful blue and flicked my tongue. "I am Ana...who are you?"

The Blue Creature brought me into a new environment, one I quite liked. It had soft soil, a hiding log, a humid containment area, and plenty of foliage and wood for me to lounge in. Joining me were my siblings, both who looked somewhat different than I.

Whilst their scales were a vibrant blood red and amber, mine were crimson and marmalade patterns on pure snow white scales.

My siblings were both of my gender. Sisters named Persephone and Zoe. Mine was Anastasia, but I was always called Ana, unless I was being scolded for fighting with my sisters.

The Blue Creature found pleasure in pampering us and showing us off to the other two-leggers who came to her den. I found the meaning behind our names at some point, although I was not sure at which.

Anastasia, my name, meant Resurrection. Persephone, was the Greek Goddess of the Underworld, who also represented Death. And Zoe meant Life.

The Blue Creature enjoyed calling herself our mother, spoiling us with delicious treats and bringing us out of our environment to bask in a much warmer area from time to time. We eventually had grown accustomed to living with our Mother.

Mother was a strange creature. Her room was always filled with still images of people we had never met before, and she had objects in her room called books which she would stare at for several hours, explaining to us about each and every story written in those books. She would sometimes act as if she was an idiot, mumbling to herself how pathetic it was to speak to us, creatures who could not speak the same human language as she, but we thought she was loving and kind to consider us as worthy speaking companions.

On some days, she would squeal and rant about a group of 7 boys going by the name BTS, and other days, she would go on and on about a magical school called Hogwarts, a camp of half-God children, or even a dystopian future with rebels and marriage selections. Persephone and Zoe loved it when Mother spoke of love in each story fondly, dreaming to one day find their own eternal mate.

Mother had met hers.

She met a man, a strange whose smell I did not recognise. At first, they were not too close, and I preferred it as such, however, Mother fell in love with the man's brown orbs, and they married after a year of learning how to love each other. My sisters dreamed for a love like that.

But inside, all three of us knew it was impossible.

It was imbedded into our genetics. It was part of who we were to abandon our mates after one affair and to birth our eggs, only to leave them to fend for themselves. After all, it was how Mother had found us. Alone, our true parents nowhere to be found. Still, it was alright to hope, wasn't it, that we could defy our nature to pursue something much more wonderful.

I was not as optimistic as my sisters.

When all three of us came of age, Mother had brought in three males of our species for us to choose a mate. Zoe and Persephone had immediately taken a liking to two of the three males, namely snakes belonging to Mother's friend, named Niko and Sanguine.

I stared at the final male who I was expected to mate with. He was very much like my sisters in term of colouring, and although I did feel that he was attractive, my heart could not stomach the idea of mating, only to abandon both mate and child.

So with a frozen heart, I refused.

I refused to mate with any male that Mother brought, guilt boiling as I watched her disappointed face. She brought me to the vet, a man who had always made sure my health was in its prime since I was a hatchling. I saw him every six months, and he was very kind.

Mother seemed surprised when he clarified that there were simply times when snakes such as myself did not want to breed, whether for preferential reasons, or another. Mother seemed to be hesitant, but she gladly accepted my decision not to take a mate, and I was grateful.

A few days after their mating, my sisters grew gravid, and a few weeks later, birthed eggs which Mother collected for safekeeping. My sisters were afraid that they would fulfil their nature and never see their children again, but our mother, low and behold, waited until they hatched, before she placed new environments on either side of ours, containing my nieces and nephews, separated by their genders.

There were significantly less of them than there were eggs which my sisters had birthed, but Mother explained how keeping all 32 of my sister's children would cause financial troubles for her and Father. At the very least, 2 of my nieces and 3 of my nephews got to stay. 4 of the rest of the clutch remained with their fathers, and the rest had been entrusted to those who wanted to care of them. Generous two-leggers who appreciated our kind.

Soon, Mother and Father had a two-legger child of their own. A child who had Mother's beautiful blue eyes.

I loved our two-legger brother. He was very full of spirit, and he loved us just as our Mother.

My life was perfect. I had a great family.

But all good things must come to an end.

My hazed blue eyes shut permanently at my ripe age of 15. My sisters had passed before me, leaving my nieces and nephews just as they reached adulthood. And I...

I looked up at those blue eyes once more. Mother's beautiful blue was blurred from my sight, as I felt the life being sucked out of my being. I looked to my brother Kaden and our youngest sibling, Reyna, their gorgeous blue orbs drenched in tears.

Ah...

"Mother," I hissed in my language, knowing none of them understood me. "I...want to see your eyes...again...in another...life..."

With my dying breath, my eyes shut.
