I looked around at the old house. The wallpaper was peeling, the wood floors were stained and over scrubbed, and it was completely empty.
My suitcase was at my feet, and I could feel the cold, brittle winds of winter seeping inside from the window. The glass was cracked and dirty.
I stood in that small bedroom so long that my nose turned red, and I was still freezing, despite my coat, scarf, and hat.
I heard the creaking of the stairs before I heard the raspy voice calling me to the car. I trudged down the stairs, hesitant to leave the place I had called home for so long. With a sigh, I ducked into the car.
As I watched the house disappear as we traveled down the dusty road, I wondered what the future had in store for me.
