Death and decay have always been a part of everyone's life, but nobody ever really expects it to happen to them. People usually think they're prepared for it, but never really truly prepared for what happens when death occurs. You would think that and you would most definitely be wrong about that. I always thought I would be fully prepared for when I finally died, never really expected it to not stick. I was the top spec rookie homicide detective on the case of a turn of the century serial killer. In a time when electronics and computers dominate, killers can truly be crafty sons of bitches. The killer I was in charge of tracking was nicknamed cyber, a killer who used the black web to track potential victims by hacking their computers. But oh boy did I realize way too late that I was in way over my head in this case that would cause me to become more than just a normal detective. The year was 2267 with the highlight of the century due to a breakthrough in cybernetics and bio-organics, starting the integration between humans and electronics. Pretty much people were becoming walking, talking computers, capable of connecting to the internet and each other alike all from inside their heads using a chip surgically planted in the brainstem. I always believed that technology should always stay external, that it would become a problem people wouldn't be able to fully grasp due to their ignorance, but nobody ever listens to me. I was a rookie homicide detective only on the force for two weeks when it first happened, the first death. I should probably mention beforehand that my name is Grazz, Grazz Hammer. I arrived on the scene with my first partner, a grizzled old detective named Sam Walterburg. Detective Walterburg was very experienced at his old age, having seen just about every kind of death you could imagine, but even this shook him. Someone had hacked the cyber chip implanted in the victims head and caused it to overheat and short-circuit the chip causing a meltdown of the victim's brain.
"Jesus, it smells like the victim had fried chicken cooked inside of his head." grunted Sam as he knelt near the victim, inspecting the body. He coughed as he placed a cloth in front of his mouth and nose.
"Come on Sam it's not that bad, I'm sure you've smelt worse in this job" Grazz exclaimed as he activated the database in his head. I should also probably mention that I am one of the suckers who had the chip installed in my head as well. I originally didn't want to have the chip installed but as current times go with all the databases becoming apart of the cyberbrain network, I couldn't afford to not have one in my brain.
"Sir, I have logged into the database and I will run a scan on the victim's chip to see if they have any record." said Grazz as he held his finger to his temple.
"You damn kids and your electronics, we used to be much better without all these damn electronics between us" Grunted Sam as he checked the victims' wallet for his identification.
"Yes but with these new electronics we can now communicate faster and have better results now Sam, we have become more intuned and are now better adapted to catching criminals." Sam ignored me as he out loud read out the victims' identity as if he had an audience behind him listening in.
"Seems our vic's name is Albert Paster, age 28. Aparently he worked in a cyberbrain facility."
"The same facilities that work on the chips we have in our heads?"
"Yeah genius i believe so, you know of another facility that does the same thing?"
"Yeah yeah, I get your point sam let's go." Chuckled Grazz as he lit a cigarette and got in the car.
Upon arriving at the facility we had no idea what we were going to stumble into. It was a site that haunts me even to this day. As we entered the building there were bodies everywhere, security guards with melted heads, exploded heads and what looked like gunshot wounds. Except there were no casings on the ground anywhere. From the looks the bodies were headed towards the facilities research and development sector, where all their "fun" toys were located.
"Christ it looks like someone's been busy tonight" Gruffed Grazz as he drew his pistol.
"Shush rookie we might not be alone." Whispered Sam, revolver already drawn. Sam's revolver was a custom made double barrel revolver with a modified cylinder to hold twelve rounds instead of six. It was pure black with a beautiful white handle.
As we walked into the main area of the research wing, it wasn't hard to figure out where to go with the bodies leading the way. Down the hall to a big metal door blown off its hinges, top secret in big red letters on the doors now smoking on the ground. Inside the large room were several large containers carrying some metallic liquid in them, all of them intact expect the one at the end. Where a hooded figure was standing, blood covering their hood.
"Alright kid, start talking or get shot!" Yelled Sam as he pointed the revolver at the hooded figure.
"Human wisdom and evolution are fickle things arent they?" Chuckled the figure as they raised their arms. Their arms covered in blood and the metallic substance from the last tank. A head in one hand and some unknown firearm in the other."Were constantly striding in advancements in both, but truly wisdom is the lacking of the two."
The hooded figure spins around before either of us realized it, the sound of three shots firing off before either of us could do anything.
My mind stood at a standstill as the feeling of the three bullets ripped through my chest and shattered the container of the metallic behind me, covering me in the substance. As the substance covers my head I see Sam get riddled with bullets and collapse, the only thing I hear is "Become one" as my vision fades to black.
