CHAPTER ONE | THE PERFECT TOWN
( the disappearance of will byers )

DECEMBER 25, 1983

SMALL TOWNS are typically a living stigma of buried secrets and dark history. Any mystery novel you pick up more likely than not starts on a cul de sac or deep in the woods. They often mention the phrase "things like this just don't happen here" and if that's the kind of book you were hoping to read - then welcome to Hawkins, Indiana. A seemingly normal town full of normal people going about normal daily activities.

Neighbors waving to each other as one mowed the lawn and the other got their mail. Children riding bikes into unknown hours of the night. A perfect family surrounded by their white picket fence settling a nice turkey down for their dinner. All life was as it was supposed to be - completely normal.

Until it wasn't.

A boy, the age of eleven, suddenly vanishes into the thin air after leaving his friends house on a seemingly perfect night. His brother cooped up at his girlfriends house after the discovery of a letter left behind by her mother only hours before the declaration of her disappearance. All while a young girl, a similar age to the boy, escapes her life of cells and tests into the uncharted.

Quite curious for a rather "quiet" town.

Though unexplainable, people tried to find excuses for the macabre because it was Hawkins and things like this just don't happen here.

THERE WAS no breakfast on the table the next morning. Usually, the wooden table was stacked with foods of all varieties. Her mother had a knack for cooking; it came naturally for her. As much as Janey, who preferred to go by just Jane, tried to learn the trade she was always able to burn water. It was a miracle their house was still intact. So she stuck to less dangerous hobbies; like writing.

Plucking some keys and forming a cohesive, well flowing sentence was something Jane could pride herself in. Most of her inspiration came from the ambiance of the night. The quiet cricketing outside the office window and the tapping of the keys before her swept a kind of calmness through her body. It felt right.

Her dream was to have a published article in Hawkins Highlights. Jane's father never really approved of writing as a career; it was more of a pass time in his eyes. Nothing like the lives he saved at the police station. Though as much passion as she had for the art, her fathers opinion of her always came first.

Reputation was a valuable thing to Edward Klippert. There was a kind of fulfillment in having the most perfect family in Hawkins. The white picket fence surrounding the yard so that their dog could run out whenever he wanted. A big house pushed up next to other big houses to establish the wealth divide the town clearly took pleasure in claiming. Sunday barbecues with the neighbors and the kids Jane grew up with who had changed come their time for puberty.
