I'm going to die. Was my last thought, breathing hard and running bare foot and muddy, my gown torn and ragged, water running down my skin from all the freezing rain. Not knowing where I'm going or what lies ahead or even what I'm doing outside. Just that I have to run and get away. My only thoughts are to keep running! And that's exactly what I'll do even if it's with my last breath. Sucking in the cold hard air as if it's my last. I run faster running for my miserable little life twisting and turning branches hitting me left and right not one single bit of light lighting my path but the moon whose light keeps flickering through all the clouds of darkness on this night showing a wickedness that I have never seen before. Twigs and briars ripping at my gown yet knowing I can't stop, constantly I look back not able to see nothing but darkness. Tears flowing freely down my cold and dirty cheeks like little diamonds, my long dark hair tangled in shambles due to all the branches grabbing and tearing at it. Yet all I could do was keep looking back out of fear because somewhere out there he was out there watching me. I could hear him breathing raggedly running behind me and the breaking of limbs and branches as he ripped them out of his way. I knew my time was slowly running out by the sound of him getting closer. Keep running Mia and don't stop. I mutter to myself. When suddenly just like that the snap of a twig my time ran out. Waking up from the nightmare I had just had I get up terrified and shivering I roll out of my bed and head towards the bathroom to get ready for the day ahead. Not really knowing what lied ahead for me.
Looking out of her curtains Mia watched the man across the street step out of his vehicle bringing loads of boxes into the house or placing them in and around the yard. Noticing that he had nobody with him she guessed he was single. Shrugging she sighed, great something the women in the neighborhood are just going to love. Turning to let go of the curtains she spied just one such female Cindy May walking across the street her red heels tapping the asphalt hips swaying till she's in front of him placing her hand out for him to shake which he readily took. Watching as they talk for a while Cindy turnt and began walking back towards her house her hips swaying back and forth reminding me why I needed to hit the gym in the morning. Shrugging I finish letting the curtains slip close but not before fully turning and noticing how the new neighbor was watching me instead. Our eyes slowly met; his steady and bright mine curious and weary he waves and I push at the closed curtains making sure they are fully closed.
My hallway clock on the wall began to strike loudly startling me. Noticing it's almost 9 at night I head to bed with the new neighbor on my mind. Once in my room I begin pulling on my nightgown I had laid out from earlier. I head to open my window by the bed allowing the cool evening air in. However one bad thing about Cross Creek, Louisiana is the mist that lingers through the night that hides whatever lies in the dark beyond waiting. Not being able to withhold the shiver that ran across my skin I crawl into bed reaching to turn the lamp off and close my eyes knowing that as as soon as I'm asleep I'll dream again. Except tonight something feels off slapping my pillow I plug my head phones in and slow my breathing.
Stop! the dark tall shadow of a man growls out to me grabbing towards me yet not close enough to actually reach for me yet my fear keeps me moving; tiredness and thirst my constant battle, yet my body's pain is no longer important looking around I see a road branched in two with a sign. Great I think to myself I'm back in this dream I shiver questioning if I'm really awake. All at once the pain hits me burning through me reminding me that I'm still alive the pain unbearable running through my veins like hot fire, causing me to stumble and fall face downwards into the mud still crawling towards the sign. Moonlight shinning through the darkness, fueling my quest to be free yet knowing it's so far out of reach. This is the end of the path I'm so close I tell myself as I try getting up, but it's no use as I drag myself through the cold wet mud finally collapsing to my death. When suddenly I'm picked up and thrown over a cold hard masculine shoulder.
