Chapter 3
"What the hell happened to your head?" Jenna openly gaped.
I quickly slapped a hand to my forehead where I had attempted to hide the ugly looking bruise with concealer. A group of year seven students who were passing by stared at us with incredulous expressions before turning to each other and whispering loudly.
I hurriedly dropped my hand, realizing that brought even more attention to myself.
"Well?" Jenna prompted, waiting for a reply.
"Is it that noticeable?" I asked anxiously, completely ignoring her question because in all honestly, I couldn't answer.
She gave me a sideways glance, her forehead creasing as she thought.
"Well, maybe if you were blind you wouldn't be able to see it,"
Turning around, I made sure to check if there was a teacher in sight before pouncing on Jenna.
We tumbled to the floor in a heap, and despite a few early comers who looked at us strangely we continued to play-fight.
"Why do you always make unneeded comments?" I finally heaved out, while panting for breath.
We struggled to get to our feet, picking up our bags and brushing ourselves off.
Jenna shot me a smile, as we stopped outside our English class.
"Because I'm your best friend and I can." She said, sticking her tongue out childishly.
"Can what?" Ben, one of our friends asked, startling the both of us. I turned around and punched him in the arm.
"Can nothing! Do you have to sneak up on us?" I asked, frowning at him.
He grinned at me, reaching out with a large hand. Before I could even contemplate what he was thinking of doing, he had already gotten to my hair and messed my blond mane up.
I shrieked, trying to escape his hand but my hair already looked a mess.
"Ben you pig! My hair is impossible to sort out and you've just gone and messed it up when I finally got it looking like human hair!"
It was almost impossible to stay mad at Ben when he continued to grin at me, his perfectly straight teeth in clear view.
"Oink" He said, imitating a pig and only proving that he wasn't taking me seriously.
I opened my mouth, ready to continue reprimanding him but stopped short when Jenna wrapped her arm around my shoulder. I turned to look at her, having completely forgotten she was there for a moment.
"Lovers tiff- isn't that cute," She teased.
"Oh shut up!" I growled but a blush dominated the most part of my face. I glanced at Ben before averting my gaze to the ugly green tiled floors.
Peeking through lashes, I smiled sheepishly at Ben while elbowing Jenna in the ribs. She grunted before wrapping a protective arm around herself fearfully.
"Children!" Ben laughed, moving to sling his arm around my shoulder in place where Jenna's arm had once been.
I leant against Ben's side, enjoying the feel of him vibrating against me as laughter raked through his body. As soon as he started laughing, he stopped.
I had to arch my neck to look at him because despite being tall, Ben was even taller. He towered over most people, standing at 6 foot 1.
"What's up?" I asked, following where he was looking.
A group of students were making their way up the long hallway. I had not seen these kids before, and I found it odd that there would be so many new students in one day- especially seeing as they all seemed to know each other.
A girl with pretty green eyes and long dark hair walked ahead as though guarding the group. I watched her move gracefully, her loose clothes moving behind her.
"I think those are the gypsy kids" Ben whispered, never taking his wary eyes away from them, even when they passed us and took a sharp turn.
"Did you see the way that girl was dressed?" Jenna asked unkindly, her face contorted into a scowl.
The girl's clothes had been a little revealing. A pink skirt that barely concealed her bum and a flowy top that puffed at the sleeve. Her skin had a natural golden sheen to it as though she spent most of her time out in the sun.
"Did you see the way they were all dressed?" Ben asked with an up-curled lip.
Jenna nodded vigorously, her dark red curls bobbing with each jerk of head.
"And they wonder why they're not accepted into society?"
I shifted uncomfortably, letting Ben's arm drop from my shoulder. In all my time being friends with both Ben and Jenna, I had never seen them act so hateful. I hadn't seen anything wrong with the group; maybe their clothes were a bit much, to say that it was only school, but they looked just like everyone else.
"Hey, the bell is about to ring. Has anyone done their calculus homework?" I asked, hoping to change the subject.
Ben smiled, his lips tilting and his grey eyes gleaming.
"When do I ever do homework?" He asked, only for both I and Jenna to roll our eyes. It was true, Ben was known for never doing homework yet he was smarter than me. I suspected he probably cheated in his test.
"Yeah and that's why you'll be serving me in pound land. Tesco is too advanced for you" Jenna said, just as we saw Mr Lewis- our English teacher- approaching.
He smiled at us but it didn't reach his tired eyes. I felt my heart go out slightly for the balding man as I watched him struggle to open the old door.
None of the people who had began to accumulate outside the classroom offered to help him, and I felt bad although I knew I would not have said anything to offer him help because I didn't want to come across as the teacher's pet.
Finally, Mr Lewis managed to twist the key and push the door open. We filed in behind him, our voices a soft buzz of chatter.
I weaved through the chairs, until I found my usual seat that was placed by the window. Despite it being January, the weather was uncharacteristically warm; especially since this was England we were talking about.
The golden rays of light stream through the blinds and shone on my pale skin, and if I squinted hard enough, I could see through the blinds and gaze at the school field where the daisies still grew.
I sat down, throwing my satchel down too. It crashed against the table leg and the strap snapped. I really needed a new bag now.
