     It starts with hope

the promise of new life

a green field dotted with white,

peaceful in the breeze;

     Then the clouds leave the sky,

heat wilts the grass, the flowers

but still they soldier on;

     Then comes the beginning of death,

bright leaves pinwheeling down to the dirt,

gathered and set out on the curb,

the frost begins to silence them in their sleep;

     Then the end, a nuclear fallout of white,

quiet and solemn is the field, once full of flowers,

the leaves have molded, the grass is brown;

     And still the SEASONS weather on.
