Chapter One

- - - - A Red Dawn - - - -

The assassin braced himself. Silently he crawled up onto the strong shutter and hung just above it so his body was hanging in line with the shutter. He clung on with one hand while unsheathing his sword with the other. Inside he heard voices. "Damn," he whispered. If he had got to them while they were sleeping, it would have been much easier.

He inhaled deeply. Then exhaled. He calmed himself. He slowly open the shutter a bit with the tip of his blade and peered in. There were two maids polishing a grand antique dressing table and a guard dressed in gleaming armour and armed with a short sword standing at a double-door. A chaise loung stood in the center of the room with a grand fireplace in the wall. "Damn times two," the assassin hissed in his head. This was the queen's dressing room. The bed chamber must be on the other side of the wooden doors. He could easily kill the guard, and the maids before they got outside to alert the rest of the palace. It was a risky move, but he had to take chances.

He pushed the shutter open and dived inside.

The maids screamed and the bodyguard leapt forwards. Ducking underneath his jab, the assassin sliced upwards through the guard's torso then pushed the dead man backwards onto the floor. The two maids kept there, screaming. He heard voices from inside the chamber. "Marian? Clarisse darling?"

The assassin dealt with the maids and advanced on the door. The two wood panels flung open and there stood the second most loved face in all the Kingdom. She was old with greying hair dressed in a velvet turqious garment. She saw a man in white robes with a dark crimson cloak and a hood casting a shadow over his face. In his hand was an ornately decorated weapon, and the bodyguard and the maid were lying still and stiff on the floor. Her face turned into a canvas of fear and submitment. Sunlight began to seep through the windows. The assassin swept across with his sword, blood squirting onto the walls. The queen screeched and staggered backwards. The King was there too, behind the bed, cowering against the wall. The queen fell back onto the bed with a slice across her shoulder. "What do you want?" she sobbed

"I came," the assassin said, "for the King."

King Solomon stood where he was. "Here I am," he said. "What do you want?"

"I came for blood."

Solomon became firightful and juttery. "Th-then take mine, not her's, please not her's, I beg of you."

The assassin wiped the blood off his blade and walked around the bed. There was another arched window in here, identical to the one he saw from below, giving a panoramic view of the rising sun across the Kingdom.

"I will do what I must," the assasssin finished and lunged with his sword and hacked relentlessly until the walls were red and dripping. He rose up from his deed. He turned to the queen. "I am sorry." He bolted passed her and into the dressing room, swinging the door open.

And there stood another two guards. They all stopped dead for a moment, then the second of the two yelled at the top of his voice: "ASSASSIN!!!" And almost instantly the bells began to chime, and they voices came, shouting and ordering. He cut down the two guards, and made his way down the staircase.
