Merlin came to me today, while I was waiting for some guy, who had just murdered three people in a bank robbery, to bleed to death from the shot that the undercover cop had landed on his leg. I liked watching the man suffer, I mean, he had just killed three people who I bet all had loved ones who would turn even a little bit closer to the crazy side after the other person's death. I imagined that this is how I would punish whoever killed my brother. Put them somewhere with no help and let them wither away with a non fatal wound that just never got treated. They would bleed to death, or their wound would get infected, or they would starve or die of thirst. Or maybe I could chain the to a rock they could never escape from and lock them in a cage with one of the creatures who only needs to eat the equivalent of a finger once a week, and never feed the creature, that would be fun to watch-
Anyways that’s what I was thinking as I watched the man suffer, that is until Merlin so rudely interrupted me.
“Alla.”
“Merlin!” I smiled brightly. He looked to be about 20, a year older than his best friend Arthur. Merlin was scrawny with brown hair tinged with the blond of his youth, and old man eyes, like little pools of knowledge. But I mean, how else would he look, slaving over books and practicing the old magic he was born with in his human lifetime all day.
In that way I think sometimes the people who live in the Elysian fields are luckier than us Gods. You see, they get to keep on living as who they were before. They keep their memories and their name, and they are the only one of themselves. Every God in Myth today is a replacement for some other man or woman, who was them before, and just the same, we can be replaced by some random human, who will never again know who they were on Earth.
“Alla, I notice you remain doing your job on Earth, even though you also seem to be waging war on everyone.”
“Just because the Gods are at war doesn’t mean that the humans deserve to live on without consequence.”
Merlin looked at me uneasily, like he was scared of what that really meant.I almost chuckled at his face. Just he wait and see.
“Is there something you would like to say to me, Wizard?”
“ I would just like to let you know that the Heros,” I snorted as Merlin said this. Heros, that’s what they refer to themselves as now, how poetic. “are building up forces to help the Gods stop you, you do realize we can stop you.”
“You do realize that I own Purgatory with every monster and soul that lives in it, plus I am extremely angry, not mention completely mental, right?”
He grimaced and started to walk away, I couldn’t help but smirk.
I really feel like I haven’t supplied enough background for you. Mostly on Merlin. So apparently, when I was on Earth, I knew him. Like, before I was a goddess. I was his sister, actually. Her name was Ganieda, and she had died at the age of 17 in a house fire. That’s all I know about her, well, that and the fact that when she died, she was chosen to be the new goddess of death.
At the time that I was chosen, countless others were chosen too. My brother, my mother, most of my friends. We had just finished a thousand year war with the Titans, and while we won, all but Ankh (who had disappeared halfway through the war), Iustitia, who was the Law goddess of the time (she died approximately 300 years later in some post war troubles, and was replaced with Themis), and an animal goddess by the name of Kohara survived. The Titans, who the war was with, they aren’t exactly how they’re described in the greek myths, but they have the same name. They’re like gods, but they are mixed with different monster parts, kinda. Each god has a Titan whose purpose is to be the anti-god. For example, even though I’ve never met him, mine is Iku, titan of death. He was killed by the former death god. Titans, unlike gods, can’t be replaced when they die, they are just much harder to kill. Pretty much, a while ago they waged war on Myth, and lost, but they killed a lot of gods anyways.
But back to Merlin. So of course our relationship was always weird. I mean, I had to bring him to the Elysian fields, so of course he recognized me right away, and I had to convince him I wasn’t her. Then, because I was curious, I went to see her when she was about 12 or something, Ganieda that is, and then, as was bound to happen, little 15 year old Merlin saw me through the old magic. Later, when I returned to Myth, Merlin confronted me and told me he remembered seeing me a long time ago, so I must know that I was in fact his sister. So because of that, relations between Merlin and me have always always been tense. He still treats me like his sister, even when I don’t remember a single moment of that life. in the past 100 years he’s at least started talking to me like the person who I am, though he still has the need to tell me everything and to always make sure I was okay. He and Hagus used to but heads all the time. But I guess I never really noticed that, never noticed how much Hagus cared for me. He cared just as much as Merlin did.
