The sun was at its highest, sweat trickled down Elena's forehead. She stood in the long queue for the school bus, which Elena, and many other students impatiently waited for. After a few more minutes, the half – full bus arrived, and stopped with a jerk, the bus lowered because of it's weight. The engine let out a sigh, as though it reminded itself of the heavy weight it was going to carry. All the other students, seniors and juniors entered the bus with all their might. The bus sighed once again, and began moving, as she searched for a seat, her knees wobbling and hands unsteady. There was no space to move, let alone breathe. Elena stood at the front of the bus, gripping onto the metal bar tightly. Loud, obnoxious students yelled and laughed. She gritted her teeth. One student tumbled into her, Elena grunted and shoved him away. No matter how many times the bus driver asked them to quiet down, they didn't. By the time she arrived at the school, she had been written up for punching someone.
Elena walked out of the principles office, gritting her teeth once again, this time- anxiously. As she closed the door behind her, she stepped into the corridor. She slung her backpack over her shoulder and pulled out her timetable, she walked through the hallways and upstairs until she reached first period - math. After an excruciating experience learning about algebra, she was determined to find the cafeteria without any help. Loud footballers raced past her in an effort to get their lunch first. The cliques of cheerleaders filled the stairs. As Elena stepped into the lunchroom alone, she looked desperately for an empty table, or a friendly face. As she searched the room, she felt someone tap her shoulder. "Hey, you look lost," she smiled at me, her smile made Elena's day a thousand times better. "Would you like to eat with me?" Elena smiled and nodded as the blonde girl led her to a table, surrounded by five people. A girl with blue hair stood up, rolled her eyes and walked to another table and sat down. Elena looked at the blonde girl, confused. "Don't mind her," she whispered, "she just gets jealous when newbies join the group." Still confused, Elena placed her bag on the ground and took out a notebook and pencil. She looked up and saw that everyone was looking at her. She grinned and tucked her hair behind her ear, whilst biting her lip. "Guys, this is..." the girl realised she hasn't asked for her name.
"Elena."
"Elena!" She said. Everyone greeted her with a smile and welcoming wave. Elena went to eat, but awkwardly looked back up after realising her tray was empty. Suddenly the bell rang, Elena looked down at her empty tray as her stomach growled. She felt a tap on the shoulder and turned to see a tall guy with ravenous, cropped hair, his skin sparked in the sunlight. He grinned, "hey, you're new right? Elena, isn't it?"
"Yeah.." she said nervously.
"I'm Jeremy. Don't wait in line, here, take this." Jeremy offered her his lunch, a turkey sandwich, strawberries and a pack of fries. Elena smirked and and bit her lip. His eyes traced down, finding her lips, then to her neck. Elena awkwardly stepped back and and thanked him for his kind offer. He walked away and disappeared into a crowd. As always, Elena left the cafeteria last, hurrying just wasn't her thing.
On the way to second period, Elena had finished eating her sandwich and fries and packed her strawberries away for later. Period two, three and four had passed and Elena was extremely exhausted. Her feet were killing her as she strolled through the halls towards the oval. Elena found an empty bench and sat down, other than a few football players and cheerleaders, the oval looked empty. Elena pulled out her strawberries and began to eat, as she went to grab a bottle of water she jumped in fright as a figure appeared behind her. "Oh my god, Jeremy? Sorry, I didn't see you there."
"It's fine," he said as he sat down next to her. Jeremy grabbed her bottle from her bag and tossed it to Elena. "Nice catch."
"Thanks."
"So, how's your first day going so far?"
"It's going..I guess. It's just a little difficult, you know.. starting at a new school and everything."
"Yeah, you could say I'm pretty new too. I just arrived here last year."
"Oh, where'd you come from?" Jeremy didn't answer, instead he got up and approached Elena.
"You probably haven't heard of it," he whispered, "it's better that you don't ask questions." Elena looked down at her food, confused. Where'd the nice guy go? As she looked back up, he was gone. There was no way he could've walked away that fast, she only looked down for a second. Elena shrugged it off and began eating again.
