I sat at the table Elina had pointed out. My seat allowed me to see her clearly through the throngs of people at the tables between us. She had known, and pointed it out to me so we could still see each other. I smiled and waved at her, and she smiled back.
'One of these days, I swear, Nick isn't gonna know what hit him.' I thought, anger filling my veins when I concentrated on how much he had hurt her. 'She's only his puppet now, but not for long. My little bird deserves a chance to fly.'
After school, I went straight home. I had to finish planning my strategy if I wanted to free Elina after the game. I went down to the basement, and put the finishing touches on her room. There was a curtain that separated our rooms in case Elina wanted privacy. 'Of course she will. She's not a slut like all the others. Once she gets used to her new home, we can take down the curtains.' There wasn't much left to do with her room. It was blue and purple, her favorite colors, with a queen-sized bed I had saved up for nine months to buy, a mahogany dresser that I had bought and cleaned up at a pawn shop, and other general necessities. Elina would even have her own bathroom. I had bought everything she wore to school, her lotions, shampoos, conditioners, the works. I stopped by the vanity and set down a $160 bottle of Chanel Chance parfum and smiled.
"Perfect," I whispered.
Finished with the room, I moved on to the Nick strategy. There was a whiteboard with my many ideas for Nick. I had narrowed it down to two options. Now I just had to pick one. "Separate him from his friends while they're smoking at the treeline and hide him in the woods," I played the scenario out in my head once more. While I loved the idea, it was simply unrealistic. "No, no, too many variables."
I crossed it out. "Well, that leaves Plan B. After the football game next Friday, there's gonna be a little surprise in his car. He won't even make it halfway home. Gotcha now, bastard," I sneered, then let out a short laugh. I clapped my hands together and jumped. Everything was set. All there was to do now was wait.
Waiting was hard. Now that I knew everything was going to work out alright, I wanted to do it now. Knowing that it was two whole days until my plan started was pure torture. I wanted to do it now, to save Elina and remove her from her suffering.
I saw her walking down the hallway, Nick towing her along with his hand around her waist. "Don't worry, my love. Freedom is coming soon."
Elina and I had the exact same schedule. She had dropped her future schedule after class one day, right in front of me. I knew she wanted me closer to her, mainly because of the secret smiles she would give me in class. The kind of smile that warmed me from the inside out.
When her beautiful eyes met mine, it was a connection; like we were perfectly in sync. Some would scoff or laugh, but I know the truth. Ever since the beginning of seventh grade, when we first started dating, there had been a connection. Love at first sight, if you will. I suppose I didn't mention that I was her boyfriend. Well, I was her boyfriend, until Nick barged in. But like I said, it wasn't Elina's choice. If it had been, she would have chosen me in an instant. I remember the tears in her eyes when she broke up with me, when Nick and his posse humiliated me. There was no way she didn't love me. You didn't cry over someone you didn't love, right?
And that is what has kept me going for all these years. Those tears in those pretty blue eyes. I exaggerated when I said 'love at first sight'. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I really liked Elina that much, but when she looked so heartbroken and defeated after Nick came, I knew. She was the one. And I wasn't going to let true love go to waste.
She was a tough girl, though. Tough enough to smile and laugh with all her friends, when I knew she must be dying on the inside. Her strength gave me strength, and hope. The hope that someday things would work out just right, and we could be together. It sounds like some over-used fairy-tale, I know. But that's just the way it is for Elina and I. And everyone knows that true love conquers all.
