Same Love

What is gay?
I'll give you a hint:
It isn't a choice.
It isn't a curse.
It isn't an embarrassment.
It's love.

Why this love is being criticized, shamed, mocked and disapproved is beyond me.

Don't we all deserve a chance to show the world that we love the person we love?

Isn't that part of the Human Rights?
Don't we deserve this?
Some people think of it as inappropriate.
Why?

The parents who cover their kids eyes.
Trying to disguise them from the truth.
From the future, yet they seem happy showing them straight PDA.
Double standards, yet somehow they're acceptable.

Somehow, straight has become the default.
It's the expected.
It's orthodox.
And it even becomes the picture perfect truth, until proven different.

You're assumed to be straight.
You're assumed to love the opposite gender.
Which makes it worse when you disappoint those expectations.

Look at how far humanity has come.
We stopped sexism, rasism, yet it never occurred to stop homophobia?

You're expected to be not racist.
Ever insulting the skin colour, and you're cruel.
Then why, when you hear the word 'fag' and all you do is laugh?
Laugh at the brutal way people label humans who've already suffored enough?

Everyone is told that you can be anybody you want to be.
That you should be who you are.
You should be.
As long as you fit the ideal life that's been imagined for you.

But you don't fit it.
And you disappoint.

All over the world, every icon from Barack Obama to Nick Jonas say they support gay love.
There are millions of best-sellers about homophobia, and same-sex love stories.

But it's not enough?
What more can we do?
Why do people still disapprove of it?
They don't need to idolize it, just accept it.
It that asking for too much?

Marriage is about love, not gender.
Nor is it about age, or race, or title, or worth, or anything else.

It's about knowing that you love someone.
Knowing that you love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with them.

Underneath us all is the same thing
A heart.
A heart that you want to share.
What matter is it that you want to share it with someone of the same gender?

If you can't be who you are, then you aren't free.
Freedom is something that we all have.
We can temporarily lose most of it, but it'll always be with us.

Look at this.
Right now, we have a chance for change.
Yes, it may be just a contest.
It may just be a bad poem that doesn't ryme.
And I may just be a young straight girl writing about gay love.

But it doesn't make anything I said or wrote less true.

So take a look at the world.
And ask yourself:
Do you really want to live in a world, where everyone is judged on who they love?
