Running.

Faster.

Faster.

The music is filling my ears.

The sweat dripping off my back.

My head is clear.

That's how I like it.

I run 3 miles everyday. It helps me think. I play the music as loud as it can go into my ears from my headphones. I let my legs take me as far away as possible. I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins. It makes me feel free.

No stress from school, friends, family, relationships.

Just me.

Fresh air.

Usually I run in a hoodie and shorts but today it's exceptionally hot so I decided on a pair of plain white shorts and a cap, that I always wear backwards.

I come to an abrupt stop outside my house, my breathing uneasy. I take a sip of water from the sports bottle.

I notice there's 2 new cars and a moving van pulled up in the driveway next door.

Great the new neighbours have arrived.

It's been bliss not having neighbours for a while ever since Nick and Patricia moved to the countryside.

I didn't have a problem with them. They were a nice couple. My parents would go to their house a few times a week for dinner. They were the same age and into the same things.

They didn't have any children so I didn't see the point of me ever going there for dinner. Plus it was better for me to be home alone.

With no one living next door for a few months now, I've been able to have music as loud as I want without complaints. I've thrown many a house party when my parents are out of town, without complaints. It's been pleasurable to say the least.

But I guess that's over.

I stop my music and take off my headphones leaving them loosely around my neck.

I stand there as my breath catches up with me. Just watching the movers take out the furniture from the van and moving it into the house.

I don't know why I'm being this nosey, usually I couldn't care less who the neighbours are . I just can't convince myself to go inside just yet.

A see a young little brunette girl run out from inside the house. She couldn't be more then 5yrs old. She has her hair in pigtails and she's wearing a floral hat, with a pink dress. She giggles as she skips in the yard. "Mommy?" her little voice yells towards the door. "Where's Riley?"

I wonder who Riley is. I bet he is a similar age to me. Knowing my luck he probably is and my parents are going to force me to be friends with him or some shit.

I groan in annoyance not wanting to know anymore. I turn on my heels and make my way inside my house.

I hear a car door slam followed by a loud bang on the floor "Ah shoot." I hear another voice cry out, a female voice but not the little girl I saw earlier.

My head darts round to the white car next door. I see another brunette girl, around about my age, with long wavy hair crouching down picking up whatever she dropped on the floor.

"Do you need any help?" I call from my yard.

She either doesn't hear me or she's ignoring me. I'm going with she can't hear me.

"Hello? Do you need help?" I ask again a little bit louder.

Still nothing.

I walk my way over to her, past the bushes separating our houses. I stand in front of her as she's picking up pieces of shattered glass.

I clear my throat trying to get her attention.

Still nothing. I look to see if she has headphones in or something but she doesn't. But thats when I notice something else.

A hearing aid.

Of course she didn't hear me.

I mentally kick myself for being an idiot. But reassure myself straight after because how would I have known.

I bend down beside her and that's when she looks up and finally notices me, cause her to jump a little.

"Oh my. You scared me." she says, clearly startled.

We both stand up at the same time. She's wearing short dungarees, with a plain white top underneath and a leather jacket.

How she is wearing a leather jacket in this scorching weather is a mystery.

She doesn't sound Deaf to me. My knowledge of Deaf people either can't speak at all or have a Deaf accent.

Is that me being ignorant and stereotyping? I don't really know it's only what I've seen on tv shows or movies. Maybe she isn't deaf at all.

"Sorry to startle you. I heard you drop something and I wondered if you wanted help. I live next door. My name is Harry."

She doesn't take her eyes off me as I speak.

"Hi Harry, nice to meet you. I'm Riley." she holds out her hand for me to shake.

Oh so Riley is a girl.

The little girl from earlier comes running outside again. She stops when she sees me.
"Mommy?" she shouts again. "There's a naked boy in the front yard."

An older looking brunette woman appears at the door, her hair in a messy bun wearing a checkered shirt and denim shorts. Dirty white converse on her feet.

"Sorry." I say. "That may have sounded bad and I'm clearly not naked, I just came back from a run and as you can see it's pretty hot outside. Your daughter here dropped something, I came to see if she needed help. I live next door. I'm Harry nice to meet you."

"Oh." she begins. "That's very nice of you Harry. It's nice to meet you to. I'm Audrey, this here is Megan and I can see you have already met Riley."

Megan waves at me with a big grin on her face. "You're pretty." she says to me.

I let out a little laugh. "Thank you."

"I broke the photo frame mom, I'm really sorry." Riley says to her mother.

"It's fine hunny, I can just get a new one. Let me go get the broom to clean this all up. It was nice to meet you again Harry." She says and takes Megan inside.

"Let me know if you need any help. I'll just be over there. Bye Riley." I wave at her and make my way back to my own house.

"Bye Harry." she shouts as I'm across the yard.

Well at least the new neighbours seem okay. Maybe they won't moan about the house parties or the loud music coming from here anytime soon.
