A chilling draft of air dispersed around the jail cell, creating a slight sway of the numerous shackles encircling a petite build. Streaks of tears formed wrinkles upon her face, her matted hair shielded weary eyes which stared down at the floor. Empty; desolate; that was how he found her...

Makoto Tomomi was a newly hired prison officer, appointed to look over the highest guarded areas. Upon accepting his new post, he began to sense the intense atmosphere of the prison. The menacing environment made chills rush down Makoto's spine, as he followed beside the other recruits to be sent to their post. He picked up his report, and instantly saw in big bold letters...

Makoto couldn't help but stare at the figure that laid before him, claiming to be a young girl. Although his training informed how appearance doesn't make a killer, he really couldn't believe that frail, meager girl he sees was marked as a serial murderer.

"Are... you done with your little inspection?" a timid voice murmured from the pitch blackness.

Makoto tensed at her abrupt comment, then gradually started to rewind as he saw that she was awaiting a response.

"I-I'm sorry if you found that unpleasing..." Makoto timidly whispered. "That's surprising," Shiori asserted, now facing up to Makoto, "most officers I encountered wouldn't dare talk to me, let alone apologize to one behind bars." The moment Shiori looked up to him, Makoto saw her eyes light up in interest. But, then again, anyone would become desperate for attention after so long being isolated. Makoto could feel the atmosphere and his stiffen body lighten up, as he started becoming more eased into exchanging words with the mysterious girl.

"Sorry that you had to endure that, it must have been troubling to have dealt with." Makoto assured.

Shiori beamed, saying, "Yet another apology and even a hint of sympathy. I would think that anyone assigned here would have least a sense of hesitation... With a laidback attitude like yours, you'd be butchered- literally- in this place." "Well," Makoto started, "I just believe that deep down all people, even outlaws, are just human beings trying to find the best in life." Even with all the training that Makoto been through, the things he witnessed and learned, they could never change that one idea that he held to most dearly.

Shiori sarcastically remarked, "How cute... It seems you really haven't comprehended that you are being surrounded by lunatics who've committed unjustifiable acts. Everyone here is ill and insane, and all congregated to this one place..." Then, before Makoto could stop himself, he retorted, "You don't seem crazy."

Right when he said that, Shiori, once beaming with content, was now back to staring at the ground, only this time staggering and wheezing in and out. Makoto dashed to the bars of the cell, shrieking at her, "SHIORI!!!"

Just then, he heard a blaring alarm, which followed through with pair of officers. "Stay back!" exclaimed one of them. Makoto was trembling with terror, as he stared at the young girl who was just having a reasonable conversation with, now losing it behind bars. Then, a thick, green gas dispersed around the cell, causing Shiori to become limp and unconscious. He turned to each of them to see if they grasped the occurrence before them, which it seemed them did, as they calmly walked out of the room with Makoto. Once entering one of the warden offices, aware of Makoto's perplexity, they began to discuss to him about the strange girl whom he thought he understood...

"To begin with," the sturdier man proclaimed, "that Shiori girl you saw was a serial killer. A rather interesting one in fact. She was first adopted into a loving the family, the Akanes, But, then out of the sudden she started to develop sick hallucinations, voices in her head, telling her to murder random individuals, which she soon followed. That then started the string of murders which seemed to get more and more difficult to crack, until one slipup cost her her life. As you can see, she loses it when someone says she isn't messed up. Thankfully, we officials were able to capture her before she could do anything else, so here she is now..." What the man said baffled Makoto, as he realized his foolishness.

The shorter man then added, "Didn't your trainer tell you not to assume such things." "Y-yeah, I know," stuttered Makoto, "I guess that first hand experience is much more different than being told it..." The sturdy man sighed. "But that girl wasn't wrong about how you'll be dead in no time. Tch, you may be new here, but anyone would have some resistance against criminals." "How many times will someone be saying that..." sighed Makoto.

"But it's the truth..." the man said, clearing waiting for a response from Makoto. After realizing that there wasn't anything else to say, he and the other guy made their way out the door, leaving Makoto to ponder about many, many things.

...

Who is this really?
