Hello. I'm Susan Kelly. I was born May 9th 1922 to a farmer and an aspiring artist. Growing up I took much fascination in the medical field of work. On the farm I would help my father with aiding to sick animals and taking care of my mother when she was sick, which was quite often. Mother wasn't always sick. If she wasn't sick she was either baking or painting. My family was great. My father was the nicest man I knew and my mother was the sweetest and strongest woman I knew. But when 1932 came, the driest year ever, my father had to sell the farm. He wasn't making any money on anything he grew. My mother took me and left him. I didn't know why, I mean I was only ten at the time. All I remember at this point was just tears and brokenness. My mother moved to New York City with me to start a new life. One where she could sell her artwork. Mother made almost $50 on all her paintings. Once I reached the solid age of 12 even worse things happened. I was at school and my principal came in my classroom and took me aside to tell me that my mother passed away of ammonia and that I was going to live with a foster parent. I knew my mother was sick but I didn't expect anything this drastic. I wanted nothing to do with that foster business so I left. I left school that day and everything and everyone I ever knew. I ran and I ran until I could find a place to call home, Brooklyn NY. I managed to scrap $30 from my travels. Enough to get a one room apartment at the age of 13. Then I saw a street marquee stating that nurses ages 13-18 would be taken as trainees for the American Red Cross. And eventually that all leads to now.
It's 12:14PM on a Monday afternoon. I'm sitting at a coffee shop in Brooklyn called Café Brook. As I get up a familiar voice says my name.
"Susan?"
A man I never thought I'd see in this light of day was looking right back at me.
