"Love. The one thing that can bring people together then viciously tear them apart."
Hi. I'm Yael. I'm your average female high school senior. Except, I don't have any friends. None. Zip. Zero. Nonexistent. Nothing. And at this point I don't want any. Everybody either breaks my heart or slowly fades away. I'm so used to being alone that it would probably feel weird to be with someone. Aand I'm rambling. Let's get on with this story.
i wake up way too early in the morning, get ready, and head off to school. it usually doesn't take that long for me to get ready due to me having the same routine for the past four years. eh, i'm over it.
once i get to school, i see the school's principal, Mr. Stevens, waiting at the door. he motions for me to come over, so i do.
"Hey Yael, I need you to do me a favor," he says, looking a little begging.
"Lay it on me," i reply, not really caring.
"Well, we have a new student coming today and she needs a little tour and maybe a buddy? You guys have the same classes, I've already checked."
"Oh. Well. Okay, I guess. I guess I could do that."
"Thank you so much, Yael. Oh! Here she comes!" he exclaims, and immediately i see a girl to my right. she's tall, but not a giant. not big, but not a toothpick either. she had short hair, a little bit above her shoulders. she was perfect.
"Hey. I'm uh, Joanne. And you are?" she asked, but i was a little too stunned to register what she was saying.
"Oh, uh, I'm Yael. Yael Marco," i reply, immediately regretting me opening my mouth.
"Last name's Garth. I like your name better," she says, laughing a bit at the end. i laugh too.
"Well, Joanne, Yael here is going to show you around the school and be your sort-of buddy. You guys have the same classes together so I'm sure you'll be best friends by the end of the year," Mr. Stevens said, interrupting our conversation.
"Yeah," i reply.
"Well then let's get going!" joanne replies, obviously excited.
meeting joanne made me realize how dull i am. i haven't been excited since 2010. i haven't felt anything since 2010, to be honest.
we walk through the doors and begin to talk.
"So where are you from?" i ask.
"Michigan."
"And you chose to come to Westerburg High in Ohio? Really?"
"Oh, it wasn't my choice. Both of my uh, parents died in a.. a car crash two months ago. My aunt lives here, so I have to stay with her."
"Oh my god I'm so sorry I assumed anything."
"It's okay. You gotta phone number?"
"Yeah. 867-53099."
"Wow. Just like the song, huh?"
"Yeah. It's a blessing and also a curse, I must say. So here's our cafeteria. Food's not bad, but it's not the best either."
"Cool. What's up here?" joanne asks as she runs up to the gym door. "
That's the gym. It's not the biggest thing in the world. Our basketball team sucks, both boys and girls. Don't even get me started on football. We haven't won a game since 1989."
"For real? So that's why I haven't seen any posters with "champions" or something. What's that about?" joanne asked, actually looking intrigued.
"Well, in 1989, these two football players, Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney committed suicide because they secretly loved each other and knew people in the 80's wouldn't accept them. Did I mention they were captain and co-captain? Ever since they died, we've not won a single game. Everyone calls it the 'Kram Curse' for some reason," i say back, not really caring once again.
"Oh. Wow. That's a long backstory for just saying that the football team here sucks," she says, looking at me with a sort of concerned look on her face.
"Yeah, I don't really go along with it. It's dumb. Everything is dumb around here."
"I take it your the pessimistic type?" she asked. i blushed. i was embarrassed.
"Yeah, I guess you could say so," I give a little shrug.
"But I feel like you could change that."
"Oh really now? Could I?"
"I think so."
"How about we get to know each other first before we hit fourteenth-base or something?" she gave a little laugh. i did too.
"Okay. Oh crap. We need to get to class. Follow me."
