Snow stung Karota's fur. He jolted awake, shaking. He looked around, fear swelling in his stomach. He got up to his hooves but collapsed as his skinny, weak legs gave out. His breath quickened as panic set in. He couldn't remember anything. Where he came from, who his parents were, nothing.
"Karota,"
The small Kirin jumped and whirled his head around, eyes widened with fear.
"W-who are you..?" He asked.
Two giant birds stood before him. One of them, a Phoenix, was covered in white, silvery feathers, and decorated with what looked like stars on its wings. The other was more intimidating, a cockatrice. It's body was covered in green scales and black feathers. Karota's mind ran wild as he stood before the massive birds.
"He is too young to bear a plume." The cockatrice spoke, breaking the eerie silence.
"I agree. Although, the plume has chosen its bearer." The Phoenix replied.
"Blasphemy! Why would two plumes choose one? It must be some mistake."
"You mustn't question the decision of Loirè."
The two birds bickered for a moment until they glared at Eachother in silence.
"..u-um...who are you..?" Karota asked again, hesitantly approaching them. They both turned their heads to him.
"I am Polaris, Phoenix of the night sky. I guide the lost ones back to their homes." The Phoenix dipped its head.
"I am Pandora, cockatrice of envy. Those who are envious and greedy turn to stone." The cockatrice scowled.
"P-Polaris..? Pandora? Those are legends.." Karota said.
Why do I remember that?
"You have been chosen by the goddess Liorè to bear...both a Grim and Infinity plume." Polaris said, presenting a silver feather. Pandora pulled out a chrome blue feather.
"These plumes grant their bearer extraordinary and unique powers. Use it wisely." Polaris said. The plumes flew inside Karota's heart. He choked, feeling a great amount of pain. He panted as the pain subsided. When he looked up, they were gone.
"W-Wait..! Polaris! Pandora! Come back! Why did they choose me?" Karota asked loudly, as if he knew he would get an answer. But the only reply was more snow. He shivered and sighed. He looked up to the sky, which was pale grey. He slowly walked into the woods, in search for shelter.
