A/N: This story takes place some time after season six of the show. The events leading up to now are pretty much the same as they were in the show, except when it comes to season six. For this story there are some changes. First Barbra Jean and Brock never separated or filed for divorce. They are still married and living together. Van never took the job with Steve Norris, he still works with Reba. Barbra Jean never got the job offer in Little Rock so she still works at that same station. These are the bigger changes I wanted to note before the story starts. There are some other minor changes but those should be explained as the story goes on. If anything comes up that needs further explanation I'll add an authors note to that chapter. Now onto the story...
"Have a good day at work!" Barbra Jean called as she entered the kitchen, seeing her husband getting ready to walk out the door. "See you later tonight" Brock stated as he approached his wife and quickly pecked her lips. He smiled at her, then turned for the door and walked out to his car. Barbra Jean had some time before she needed to get ready for work herself. So as soon as Brock was out of the house she headed straight for the attic. She had been doing this same routine for the past few weeks. Any free time she had with Brock out of the house she spent in the attic going through old boxes. Her thought was that if she went through them she would have less baggage when the time came. She had made a decision and she wasn't going to change her mind.
She pulled the cord and ascended the old creaky staircase. Once in the attic she took a seat and began on the box she left off on last time. She smiled when she opened the flaps, eying the first few treasures she could see. As she reached in she pulled out an old picture of herself with her sister Katie Ann and her brother Buzzard. It was a picture of them as kids at their family's Fourth of July barbecue in Fisheye Bottom. Barbra Jean's face was painted like a flag and she was wearing a flashy red, white and blue headband. Her sister stood in front of her, trying to be the center of the photo by attempting to block out Barbra Jean. Buzzard was unaware the picture was being taken. He was more interested in lighting the firecracker he held in his hand. She laughed as she looked at this picture. She always thought it represented all of their personalities perfectly.
Her smile faded when she recalled what life was like with her sister. Katie Ann was always the prettier and more popular one. Barbra Jean on the other hand was goofy and nerdy, traits that Katie Ann frequently picked on her for. She swore that every guy in Fisheye Bottom wanted to date her sister. She had always felt that boys were only nice to her in order to impress her sister. There were even moments where she thought a boy really liked her, until she found out they just wanted a date with Katie Ann. This caused her to become extremely competitive with her older sister. She felt that if she dated more guys than Katie Ann, she could finally prove that she wasn't just the "dorky sister". This competitive streak went on well into her adult years.
Barbra Jean reached for another item in the box. She pulled out a large picture of her in a black beret posing with a large group of dentists. This was when she attended the dental convention in Hawaii with Dr. Schneider. Her gut churned looking at this picture, knowing she went to that convention with a married man. She had been so caught up with outdoing her sister that she lived a very promiscuous life. She had meaningless physical relationships with countless men, especially married dentists. A time in her life she was not at all proud of.
The next item in the box was her first ID badge from when she began working at Brock's dental office. She smiled as she realized how much she has changed. Not only had she lost weight but she also dressed less eccentrically. She liked to think she was also more mature than the girl in the picture staring back at her. Barbra Jean could still remember when she first met Brock. She thought he was very attractive and she figured he would be just another notch on her long belt of dentists. However, Brock was different. He loved his wife and never flirted with her initially.
