there was a shrill cry that echoed in the thick mist. lucas ignored the screaming. it was so often and so close to him, that lucas was close to believing that the cries were only in his head. he ran, the harsh wind hitting his face and thoughts racing through his brain. yet he didn't feel nervous. he ran inside of a newly abandoned apartment and stayed in the lobby. it was utterly destroyed, those who lived inside of the apartment couldn't even remember what it looked like before this...mess. lucas had a pistol by his side and a pocket knife by the other. he clutched both weapons tightly, for they would determine how long he would stay alive in this town.
lucas heard yelling surrounding him, which made his stomach churn. he nearly froze in his spot, but he managed to run upstairs to the second floor of the apartment. as he ran straight into a demolished room, he heard loud and abrupt knocking at the front door.
they're here, he thought to himself. his head pounded and he began to feel dizzy. he slammed the wooden door behind him and locked it. quickly, lucas scrambled over to a couch and pushed it in front of the room door with all of his strength. the windows were broken, sharp glass scattered everywhere. he sat down, away from the glass, away from the door, right into a dark corner. he dropped his gun and knife down next to him and curled up into a ball. then, he cried.
somehow, he felt free now. he felt like, now that he was curled up, he was completely free from this apocalypse. he whined and shuffled in his place. crying would release so much from his mind. lucas put his head back onto the wall behind him and stared into the ceiling, patterned with holes. cold wind flew through these holes and into lucas' jet black hair. he sighed as he lifted himself up. he walked through the room, looking and investigating the bathroom, the bedrooms, and everything else. he still felt dizzy, for some reason. lucas continued to stumble through the house. the yells were growing louder, after all this time.
there was a knock.
"anyone in here?"
silence. fear. worry.
"it's locked. knock this door down, now."
lucas hurried over to the bathroom and shut the door, and locked it. more silence. more fear. more worry.
there was a loud bang, signifying that they were in.
"come out, come out, wherever you are...it's your time." the voice boomed and echoed.
they searched through the living room first, the room where lucas cried. then, the first bedroom, and the second.
then, the bathroom.
they shoved open the door, breaking it a little. a group of men, all big and muscular, stood before lucas. they were covered in blood, bandages, and scars. their clothing was torn up, their shirts nearly gone. they had large guns on their backs, pistols in their belts, and knives in their hands. they said nothing. the biggest one smirked.
"seems like he's already been taken care of."
the big man kicked lucas' dead body, and walked off.
silence.
