COLORS
Inspired by Shel Silverstein
A free-verse by Kayla Myers
My name is Tatiana and I watch for colors.
Colors aren't names to describe the hue of a thing.
Colors are like Mr. Thompson's smile. His smile is green.
Not that his teeth are green (because that would be silly),
but his smile is happy and makes the earth prosper like the trees.
Sally's dance is blue because it is fluid and vulnerable.
I can't forget how Mrs. Mandala bursts with orange and red.
She is radiant like the sun and
passionate about everything she does.
Poor little Jimmy has eyes of purple,
a deep void of midnight, captured in a simple circle.
Good 'ol Douglas has a personality of yellow.
It shines through his eyes and into my heart, 'cause this man is kind.
Remember listeners, colors aren't what you see.
Purple isn't for a grape and yellow isn't for the stars.
So what if the trees are green on the outside?
All the trees in my neighborhood are blue to me.
For all those bad days of your smile being purple,
I hope someone yellow comes along.
If you feel green, go out and show it!
There's a rainbow inside you, if only you can find it.
