'What you got Sammy?' Dean Winchester sat down heavily at the table and grabbed a doughnut from the box in the middle. Ever since Crowley died things had been suspiciously quiet. Dean didn't like it. There was no way Crowley had been that much of a pain in the arse, demons were demons were demons. Something was up. Whatever it was, he'd be ready.

'Possible case but...' Sam Winchester looked over at his brother. 'It's not really your thing.'

'How is not my thing?'

'It's in New York and you know, it's not, I mean you don't...'

'Don't what? Like the Big Apple? They've got good pie in New York Sammy, what's the job?' Dean craned his neck and nodded at Sammy to turn the laptop around.

Sighing Sam did so whilst giving his brother the breakdown of the potential case. 'There's been a spate of disappearances but no signs of forced entry, no fingerprints, no sign of struggle, no blood. Cops are stumped, so it could be worth a look. We'd have to be quick though.'

Dean studied the news articles. 'Why's that?'

'The real Feds will be on it sooner or later.'

Dean snorted. 'The real Feds couldn't find their arse from their elbow.' He shrugged. 'We got nothing else to do, might as well go ruffle some big city feathers.'

Sam nodded and gathered his things together. They were going to New York. It didn't take the brothers long to sling a change of clothes in the back seat of the Impala. Sam climbed into the passenger seat and unwound the headphones to his phone. It was a long drive, he was going to use the time to catch up on some podcasts.

'Whatcha listening to there Sammy?' Dean revved the car and put it in reverse, swinging them out of the drive and heading out to the highway.

'Just some podcasts I've been wanting to listen to.' He put the earbuds in, then frowned and pulled one out. 'You don't mind?'

Dean laughed and shook his head. 'You go right ahead.' As Sam made himself comfortable and began searching for the first podcast to listen to, Dean turned on his music. Carry On My Wayward Son blared out of the stereo.

Dana Scully walked down the corridor to her office, heels clicking smartly across the floor. She pushed the door open and saw her partners desk empty, as usual. Placing her bag down she saw the scrawled note from Mulder. Got a case.

Despite the official recognition of the X-Files as a genuine department of the FBI Mulder preferred to work from his dingy basement room. He claimed it would take too long to move all his files but she knew it was because he secretly liked being tucked away - out of sight, out of mind. But they both knew the Director watched their cases closely.

Sighing she picked up her bag and walked out of the office, heading for the elevator. One day he would surprise her and actually be in the right place.

'Scully, you're here. I've got a new case for us.'

'Aren't we meant to be working on the case in New Mexico?'

'No-one works cases in New Mexico anymore Scully. Leave it to the amateur hunters, they'll debunk the theory and it leaves us free to investigate the real cases. Three people have gone missing from New York.'

'Well people go missing from New York all the time Mulder, they become drifters, slip out of society, sometimes move back to the state they originally came from.'

'This is different Scully. There was no evidence of a break-in, all personal effects remained behind, no notice given in at work, no farewell party with friends. In this particular case,' he paused, rummaging through the messy piles of paperwork on his desk. 'Henry Fincham never even said goodbye to his wife. One minute they were there, the next they'd gone.'

Scully held her hand out for the case file notes. 'It doesn't mean it's an X-File though Mulder,' she said distractedly as she read through the notes.

'The number of reported UFO sightings in America are often associated with rural areas but in actual fact, the majority of these reports are concentrated in major cities and dense population hubs. New York is actually a hotspot for sightings and alleged abductions. I've booked our flights, we should head over to the airport now.'

Scully sighed but knew she wouldn't be able to dissuade her partner when he was this excited about a case. Thank goodness she kept a packed overnight bag in the office.
