"Listen for the voice of God, then follow it, and know that in time you will find your salvation," my teacher proclaimed from the front of the room. I made an effort to focus on the lecture, but I couldn't shake the feeling of someone's eyes on me as I eavesdropped on the conversation among some girls nearby. "I know, I didn't even do anything wrong! He just totally snapped at me!" they whispered.

"Really? So, what did he say?" her friend inquired. Our teacher's voice regained my attention as he asked, "Yagami, are you still with us? Can you please translate the following sentence into English?" The class fell silent in anticipation as Light reluctantly diverted his gaze from me with a sigh, then stood up to read aloud to the class.

"Follow the teachings of God and receive his blessings, and so, shall be that the seas will again become bountiful and the raging storms will subside," Light recited before taking his seat again as the school bell rang, dismissing our class. School was finally over, and I was eager to take a break from being cooped up in lectures.

As I was making my way home I had one of my earbuds in to listen to the news;

"Today, at approximately 11:00 a.m. a 32-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his apartment in the city of Yokohama Karigara Prefecture. Kagirara police are treating this case as a homicide."

"In other news, today, suspected murderer Tokuji Naoki was arrested in the district of Shibuya Tokyo. He is being held in custody facing murder charges for the brutal slaying of his common-law partner, who was only 25 at the time of her death."

My eyes wandered down as I felt the weight of the recent murders. I continued walking along the same crowded path as always. My eyes grew hot as I couldn't help but empathize with what the victims' families were going through. To stop the tears, I looked up and noticed Light Yagami lost in intense thought.

Stepping out of the school's entrance, I noticed Light picking up a notebook from the grass. He muttered to himself, then smirked as he flipped through it. After placing it down, he walked away. Suspicion gnawed at me, so I approached and grabbed the book myself. On its cover, it read Death Note. Peaking my interest, I opened it to find English text filling its pages. The first page outlined its usage: The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

Upon reading the first bullet point, I dropped the book in a panic. I was aware of supernatural, but I couldn't imagine the power of this notebook. Quickly, I moved away from the grassy area, passing Light. All I could think about was how he had known about the book's presence there.

My classmate, y/n, dashed past me, prompting me to rush back to the Death Note. I wondered if she had noticed it. Quickly, I picked it up and stuffed it into my school bag before continuing along my usual route home. As I paused at the train tracks, a wave of doubt washed over me. I realized how foolish I had been to even entertain the idea. It had to be a joke, right? How could someone possibly die from having their name written in this thing?

Arriving home, I call out, "Mom, I'm home," as I kick off my shoes and step inside. Making my way to my room, I settle in and begin reading the rest of the rules of the book. This book will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his or her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
