Chapter 4 (Part 1 & 2)

I could feel my consciousness slipping but I fought against the darkness not wanting him to leave again. I know if I fell asleep that when I woke he would be gone. But no matter how hard I tried the tunnel closed in. The last thing I saw was his golden eyes.

I heard voices and opened my eyes to see my mother and father sitting on either side of my bed. They both started to talk at the same time but it sounded so muffled. What were they saying? After a moment my mother left the room. My father took hold of my hand and I knew he was telling me it was going to be alright. But what was going to be alright? I couldn't feel anything. My head was numb and I knew I must have been on allot of pain meds.

"Devon!" Was the only thought that was clear in my mind and I screamed it out. My eyes darted around but didn't see anything and I couldn't move my head. "Devon where are you?"

Outside.

I managed to breath out in relief that he hadn't left. "I'm so glad you're back."

Casey. He sounded different. Distant. Like he did when I first met him. I just came to make sure you know. I want you to stay away from me. I'm done playing with humans.

I wanted to ask why. I wanted to know but his harsh tone hit me. I had thought for a while that maybe he was just trying an experiment and called it off. Now I knew it was true. He never cared for me as a friend or otherwise.

"Cassandra what's wrong?" My eyes focused in front of me where my father was staring looking on the verge of panic. I realized I was crying. I wiped the wetness away and reigned in my tears.

"Nothing." I managed to say through my dry hoarse throat. It was then that my mother came in with the doctor. I forced my head up off the pillow. "So doc, when am I getting out of here?" I figured I was in good shape since there was no pain.

The look of uncertainty that went between my parents and him made my breath catch. "Casey. I'm going to do a test right now. Ok?" I nodded as he lifted up the blanket revealing my feet. I watched with interest as he took out a pen and ran it along the bottom of my feet. "Did you feel that?" I shook my head unable to say it or think it. But I knew it. He even tried poking a pin in my skin but that only proved to make me cry from horror.

"Doctor is there any hope she will walk again?" My mother asked as I tried to process what happened.

"Her spine was jarred and she has three herniated disks in her lower vertebrae. I'll have to run a few more tests but mostly it's a matter of time. We need to see if her body will heal. If the swelling goes down and relieves pressure on the nerves then yes. It is possible, but I can't give you numbers until I run more tests."

The fire was deemed an accident set off by bad wiring, everything was lost. Bob had come by on multiple occasions to apologize to me but I didn't blame him. By the end of the month the numbers rose to seventy percent chance. My mother had put on her encouraging gloves and never stopped putting out hopeful phrases. I on the other hand had sunk into a self pitying depression.

"Let's go home." My dad said lifting me up and putting me in my new wheel chair. Sasha came in and decorated it with band logos like Seether and Disturbed. "You good kiddo?"

I nodded and looked away. I was tired of everyone being so cheerful. I wanted to just get home which was once again my parent's, so I could be alone. "You're birthday is next week. What do you want to do? Have a party?"

"No. No party. I just want to be alone dad." I said pulling myself up into the car.

"But Casey.."

"I said No!" I sighed. "Please. It's only my nineteenth anyway. It's not important. Just let me be....please."

He gave me a sympathetic look that said volumes of how bad he felt. I didn't want their pity. I wanted to be able to walk. I wanted to be able to be normal again. "Alright for now. But when you're walking again we'll throw you a party to end all parties." I knew he believed every word but I wasn't able to think that something would go right in my life, at that point.
