When I was younger, probably five, my sibling and I were playing with stuffed animals. There were only three characters; a knight in shining armour, a damsel in distress, and a villain. I remember distinctly that day, I was playing the villain and for some reason, we let him win. He got the damsel in distress, the hero was forced into servitude under the villain.
Now, I always look back on that day whenever I watch a movie or read a book because I had ingrained a principle into my brain since then. I know the movies and books and movies are unrealistic or, at least, optimistic and lacking the one thing that would make it seem real. The good guys, no matter how strong or powerful, don't always win. Sometimes they lose and the villains win.
Sometimes, everything won't turn out fine, no matter what you do, and you have to be able to accept when an ending like that comes.
