With a flick of her wrist it opens, elaborately

stylized. The handle, painted gold, is etched

with long-stemmed, red roses, coloured by her

kiss. She fans her cheek with its edge, pausing

over the bed. Moonlight caresses her contours,

white silk bleeds through drawn curtains.

I lay oblivious, wrapped in empty dreams

The last words I heard were hers; I watched

them escape her lips. She said,

"You took my heart without asking."

And tears welled in her eyes. Pools of

pain and misery adulterating.

She strokes my face affectionately

and kisses me with a blood soaked lip.

Awash with vanilla venom, she drops the

butterfly knife and leaves me

breathless one last time.

Stealing the beat of my heart.
