Second Chance

Chapter 1

The baby's cries echo through the halls. Nurses and doctors rush to the room. The nurses cries join in as the doctors rush to try to bring Kaleina back to life. A nurse who is calm picks up Kæly then orders another to get Nathan. They manage to stop the newborns from crying as all four watch the doctor's. Their eyes filled with tears as their lips slightly quiver.

Princess Kaleina has gone.

Luke's P.O.V

I watch as doctors and nurses start rushing around, not really paying attention to where they are going. I'm too baffled by what just happened. I watched my friend and mate give birth to another man's kids then watched the poor things... Die. I might not have liked that they were someone else's but they didn't deserve that. No one does. I had rushed out after Nate but realized it was no use. What could I have said that would have possibly stopped him? He had just watched his own flesh and blood die. I wasn't able to handle when my whole pack, along with my family, was slaughtered. Before my mind could travel to my dark past, I quickly shake my head and look around to see a doctor heading towards me with a grimm look.

"Luke is it? I don't know how to say this but Kaleina... Has killed herself..." He trails off as I looked at him in shock. 'How could I have left her alone when she was most vulnerable? What have I done? This is all my fault. I left her.' My mind starts racing, already blaming myself.

"The twins, however, are alive. I don't know how. I think she gave her life in exchange for her babies. They are with very skilled nurses now. You better get Nate back here." He says and I nod while thinking of where he could be. Then he hands me Kaleina's things and walks away. I dig her phone out of her bag then call Nate.

"Kaleina I'm so sor-"

"Stop. It's Luke, we have a situation. Get back here now." I cut him off then hang up. What? I still don't like him.

A couple minutes pass then I see Nate speed walking down the hall to me.

"What happened? What's wrong? Is Kaleina okay?" He says worried and at his last question I can't help but tear up slightly.

"Kaleina gave her life for your kids. They're alive and with the nurses and they are waiting for us to come get them. What are we going to do?" I say waiting for him to be egotistical and say he doesn't need my help. I'm doing this for Kaleina. When I look at his face I'm surprised to see his expression; it's one of loss.

"I don't know what to do. There's no way in hell I'm putting them up for adoption. They're my blood as well as the princess's. Did Kaleina ever mention any family to you?" He says as he looks at me hopefully but I sadly shake my head. She never really talked about her past. At this moment I feel like I know nothing about her. Then I remember I have her phone. I get on it and start looking through her contacts. I find one labeled "little sis". I call it then put the phone to my ear.

"KC! When are you coming home? I miss you." The seemingly little girl says and I'm at a loss. She has to be like 8. Kaleina never mentioned a little sister. What else do I not know?

"Yeah... Hi. Can I talk to your mom little one?" I say slowly. As there's a pause on the other side.

"Who you calling little? I'll have you know that I am 12 years old, Jack Apple. And here's my mommy." She says while my jaw drops. 'Did she just call me a Jack Apple? What does that even mean?' I think confused.

"Kaleina...?" The kid's mom asks slowly and slightly surprised.

"No. This is her friend Luke. We have a bit of a situation..." I trail off then start explaining everything. The weird thing was that the lady never cried. She never choked up or anything. She listened silently and when she spoke it was almost monotoned. I felt on edge with her lack of emotions. I'm calling to tell her that her daughter has died and she's like a robot. Not in like a coping mechanism way but in a trained way.

"Do you have the children with you? If not, then get them. I'm going to text you an address. Since you're in New York this place is quite a ways away. Considering the babies are Kaleina's, the hospital while provide you with everything you need to travel this far with them. Protect them and get them here safely. I will call the hospital about Kaleina's remains. See you tomorrow." She hung up before I could even reply. The phone pinged signaling that I got the message of the address. I typed it into my phone's GPS and she was right about seeing us tomorrow.

"We better get moving. This is going to be a long road trip." I tell Nate and he nods then goes to find the nurses who have the twins. I go up to the doctor from before and tell him that we're taking them to Kaleina's family which is far away. He nods then gets us everything we need for the kids as well as stuff for Luke and I. They even provided us with clothes for Nate and I as well as food. While we go change they put the twins into little onesies.

The nurses help us install the car seats into Kaleina's car then shows us how to properly secure the kids. We load up the items they gave us then thank them for their help. I get in the driver's side as Nate gets in the other side. I turn the GPS on but he stops me. When I look over Nate is holding another set of keys and Kaleina's phone while looking at a picture.

"Wait. We need to make a quick stop first." I nod then head to what was once Kaleina's home.

When we get there only Nate gets out of the car. All he says is that he won't be long. I sit there thinking about what the future holds. I'm going to uproot my life because of my mate's children. The bad thing is that I'm willing too. Even if I have to go with that bloodsucker, Nate. Maybe him and I can become friends?

I shake my head then call Sapphire. I let her know what happened and what will be happening. I tell her not to tell anyone else where we're going, especially Skylar. She agrees and asks for a picture of the twins which I, of course, send her. Then we hang up.

I look up and see Nate walking to the car with a bag and Chochi next to him. He lets Chochi in the back with the kids then puts the bag in the truck. He hops back in his seat.

3rd P.O.V

"Let's go." Nate says then glances back at his kids and their new protector laying on the floor. For some reason he just knew that Chochi didn't die along with Kaleina like normal bonding animals do. He just felt the urge to go to her apartment and he was slightly stunned when he saw Chochi waiting at the door seemingly for him.

Luke couldn't help but keep glancing at Nate who had this weird look on his face as if in deep thought. He looked in the review mirror at the twins and Chochi and wondered if he was thinking about them.

They didn't know it but Chochi was bonding with the kids in the back, but not by blood. That'll come later when they're older but for now it's just by touch. Kaleina had entrusted Chochi to the twins which postponed the death of the animal. He will now die when both the twins have passed.

Everyone is silent the whole drive. Even when they make a few stops here and there a word is never uttered. It's like they're all waiting for what the future while hold.

The next day they arrive at the house. They get the twins and Chochi then walk to the door. With a deep breath they ring the doorbell.
