In the darkness she sat. Wondering if anyone even noticed she was missing yet. Probably not. She knew no one would look for her here. The old hospital has been abandoned for decades. No one comes here anymore. Not even to vandalize it.
The floors were covered in rubble, the paint, long pulled from the walls, and all the windows had been broken out years ago. The night was still and calm. Strange for this time of year. She guessed the sky got everything out when the heavy snow storm moved through that day.
She stood from the old worn out wheelchair over to the broken window. She was amazed. The world looked so peaceful outside the window. Almost like the world she ran from was really just a bad dream. But she knew it wasn't. All the pain she went through was real.
She lifted her hand to her eye. It had swollen completely shut now. She could barely touch it without it hurting. A tear fell from her good eye. How could anyone be so cruel? Let alone someone who claimed to love her.
She took a deep breath. "Easy Rae. You got out. He won't ever find you here. He thinks you're too scared to run this far."
Rayne Davis was 28 years old and for the last 3 years, lived with her now ex-fiancé Garrett. Things were great up until last year around mid-year. His mother had been sick and lost her battle with cancer. After she died, he became a heavy alcoholic and would beat her, yell at her that it was her fault his mom was dead, and on the really bad days, he would beat her and then rape her. She spent months trying to get away. Finally, he decided he was going out hunting with some friends. Out of town.
She took advantage and as soon as the truck was out of sight, she packed a backpack full of some clothes, pictures of her family, and a few other essentials. She made her way to the bank and withdrew every last cent from the account. Then, she started walking.
A big winter storm found her about 20 miles down the road. She was so thankful she wore the heavy winter coat her mom had gotten her a few Christmases ago.
She had known of this old hospital. She had never ventured to this place herself, but she had heard all the stories. Most of the stories talked about this place as haunted. Now that she was here, she could see why. Despite the look of the place, it was after all, a hospital. She was sure the building had seen its fair share of death and pain over the years. She could sense that something was here, but she wasn't sure what it was. She did know that she needed to rest. She found a bed that was sturdy enough to support her and with a mattress that wouldn't kill her if she rolled wrong. She put her backpack at one end of the bed and lay down using it as a pillow. Before she knew it, she was asleep.
