Had various roles in plays,
Never once the protagonist.
A supporting character I was,
Sometimes less, but never more.
I walked towards an imaginary cave,
Looking at my small feet,
Holding a non-existing lamp,
Showing Mary and Joseph the way.
An important, essential character;
I would say, to feel better,
For not even being considered.
Too quiet and shy, too dark skinned.
When I thought it was over,
it became worse and worse.
Sometimes, willingly to please,
Other times, forced to ease.
At first I wouldn't notice,
But better alternatives show.
Eventually they forget,
The supporting character role.
Conversations become shorter,
Fake smiles, awkward pauses.
A tight squeeze around the beating pump,
Dreading the end of it.
Maybe I was in the wrong,
Relationships have to be maintained.
Now I understand:
Friendship comes with an expiration date.
