I run as fast as my legs can carry me, the sound of my shoes hitting the sidewalk creating a rhythm that calms me. You may ask what I'm running from, and I can give you many answers. My so called family, my "friends", my home, my school, my life, and my thoughts. Most of these things I can escape by running away, but I can never run from myself.

The burning in my chest grows more painful as I continue, I have been running for hours now. Before I know it I'm knocked down, my back scraping against the sidewalk. I look up to see a boy who seems to be around my age and I'm immediately stunned by his appearance. He has beautiful dark brown eyes with some green swirled in, a very structured jaw and shaggy dark brown hair with a purple streak which lies upon his forehead. His eyes fill with guilt as he reaches his hand out for me to take.

I smile up at him and take his hand in mine as he constantly repeats "I'm so sorry" under his breath. He lifts me off the ground and I giggle at his constant apologies.

"Hey, it's okay!" I speak up as he's about to apologize for the hundredth time. He smiles weakly at me and I can tell he still feels slight guilt. "Really, it's my fault, I should've been paying attention while I was running" I assure the boy.

"It was my fault, I really didn't mean to-" he tries to spit out quickly.

"Let's start fresh, okay? My name is y/n." I cut the boy off, tired of all the apologies coming from both of us.

"I'd like that, my name is Ethan." Ethan replies, a wide grin appearing on his face.

"Well, Ethan, lets get to know each other more. I'll start, obviously my name is y/n, I live a few hours from here with my adopted parents and I love making art. How about you?" I said as I sat down in the grass. Ethan made his way over and sat down next to me.

"The only thing interesting about me is that I just bumped into an incredibly beautiful girl while on my way to the skatepark." Ethan said, letting a small laugh out afterward. I laugh along with him, mostly because he called me beautiful. The laughter dies down and he looks over at me.

"Why are you running anyways, you said you lived a few hours from here?" He questions, a concerned look on his face.
I look away for a minute, pulling pieces of grass out of the soil.

"That's a good question, Ethan." I reply, returning my gaze to him.

"Then give me a good answer." Ethan says, his hazel eyes meeting mine. The tears are building up in my eyes as I think of all the reasons I can't return home.

"I was running away from my problems. My adopted parents hate me and told me to leave. They think I'm ungrateful because I want to learn more about, and possibly meet, my birth parents. My friends all left me for the popular group the first opportunity they saw. My best friends Ethan, the people who said they would always be there for me. The people who told me they would always protect me from those who would push me and call me names while I walked down the halls. Now they are those people, and I'm left alone. I have nobody." I let out with tears streaming down my cheeks. I look away from Ethan in embarrassment. I barely know him and now he probably thinks I'm a freak. I'm shocked when Ethan quickly grabs me and pulls me into his chest while slowly rubbing my back.

"Hey, it going to be okay y/n" he whispers to me, "you have me, I'm right here." I close my eyes and try to calm myself down, allowing my breathing to return to a steady rhythm. I lift my head off of his chest and wipe my drying tears in embarrassment.

"I'm so sorry Ethan, I shouldn't have done that. I usually don't open up that quickly." I let out with a small giggle.

"It's okay, I understand. It's good to let your emotions out, we shouldn't keep everything bottled up." He responds with a smile on his face. He gets up of the grass and grabs my hand, helping me up.

"Well, I should really get going." I say quickly, nervousness laced through my words.

"No, please let me help you. You can come back to my place! I live with my twin brother." Ethan speaks quickly, nervous for me and my living arrangement.

"Fine E, but only for tonight! I don't want to cause you any trouble." I tell him, not wanting to annoy him or his brother.

"Fine y/n, but please consider staying for longer. I really want to get to know you better and I'm sure my brother will like you too." He tells me with a large smile spreading across his handsome face. With that, he grasps my hand in his and leads me to his home.
